I think the man was just trying to make things right with his maker.

I'm actually even more impressed with him after reading that article. He was a human being just like the rest of us, an apparently experienced the emotions of inventing something that has killed many in the name of evil.

Great point.

I hope he rests in peace knowing his creation also saved many lives. I guess it is a double edged sword for him.

It certainly did save lives and defend his country. People tend to not focus on the good, rather than the evil, which is was used excessively for. If I were him, it would bother me that terrorists used my rifle design to inflict pain and suffering. Such is life. I will always love the AK!

That's the thing with the AK. So many people see it as evil because most of our enemies use it. These people are foolish for concentrating on that aspect when in reality it was designed for peasants or the common man to do an honorable thing....defend their country.

That is one of the reasons why i like it so much. Even the poor man could have an opportunity with it. And boy did he ever!

I don't really think it was necessary, though. Every rifle design has probably been seen in the hands of evil men, although the Kalashnikov definitely does take the cake in this category.

If it had been me in his place, I wouldn't have worried about it. He only designed the rifle with the intent of defending his country, I don't know if he ever thought it'd be the common terrorists 'favorite rifle'. Hell, even Eugene Stoner's design is becoming more prevalent in terrorists' hands today.

As we always say in the debate with the Anti's; the rifle is an inanimate object, you cannot control what the end user is going to do with it.

That report struck me as odd too. I wonder if he was in dementia when he wrote that letter? I've never heard of a gun maker/designer seeking divine forgiveness for making the implements by which his country and all the innocents in it could be defended. And it is never the gun maker's fault when weapons are misused.

I can see why he might feel that way. One of my favorite quotes about the AK is that the only thing that has taken more lives is God himself, now when that thing bears your name is imagine that it would spark some soul searching.

I think you meant to say "it was USED to kill many in the name of evil."

If Kalashnikov truly had the safety of his fellow soldiers and his people on his mind when he developed the AK then what he did was honorable. He is not responsible for how his or other governments used it for expansionism and to control and terrorize their own people. That blood is on someone else's hands. He didn't need to feel ashamed or ask forgiveness for what others have done with his design.

Patriarch Kirill should have read him Psalms 143-144!

I may be wrong but I don't think Russia has been invaded since the AK47 was developed. I say mission accomplished General!

Joseph

I'm not completely sure how Oliver Winchester thought of his guns before he died, but his wife Sarah went crazy after he died. Some mediums and paranormal people told her that the spirits of the those killed by her husband's rifles were out to get her and her inheritance. She fled from Connecticut to California and built a large mansion. This place was built in an odd and crazy way to "confuse" spirits. Look up the Winchester Mystery House.

Inanimate objects, such as firearms, do not kill people ... they are used by people to kill other people.

He should have spared himself the anguish.

Yes Sir, that is what I meant. I'm still waiting for my AK's to go out and indiscriminately kill people, but they just sit there doing nothing.
