A member of Guns.ru posted these great pics of an amazing looking AKM with the classic "battlefield pickup" look.

More pics here.

That looks sweet. When I see pickups like that, I always wonder........what soldier(s) and what war(s)?

I love the look of a well worn AK.

What defines a battlefield pickup?  I had an AK in my room in Afghanistan that we confiscated from our local guards when their contract expired, plus about 6 or 7 steel mags.  I wasn't interested in AKs and assault rifles in general at the time.  I took it with me when I drove around the FOB looking for feral dogs.  Wish I took the time to find out more about it.  I got a pic of it somewhere.  Will post if I find it.

Battlefield pickup is usually a term that is used to describe a rifle that is just really worn looking.  Could be a rifle found in a field, captured on a battlefield.. or a brand new rifle that someone threw down the driveway until it looked old and used

Well, I found the pic.  Taken in 2010, had it for the duration of my time there.  I remember the serial number started with "AF" or maybe even "AFG", which I thought was funny because it was in Afghanistan and wondered if it was just a coincidence.  The only other markings I remember are a small triangle stamped somewhere on the receiver and some hand etching on the cover.

That would have made a nice little war trophy. If only you could.

His name was Hamdullah Zhon... He was a Taliban in the GWOT... and he got cut down in a hail of 240L fire...

This was his rifle:

Speaking of battlefield pick ups, I just ordered 3 sets of Balkans War furniture from Apex.

Continuing problem I see with the "simulated" battlefield pickup is that the finish is worn everywhere instead of only where it was most commonly handled, so it doesn't look right.

I'm weird I guess, i can't get into the look. I've bought some worn AKs over the years and end up refinishing them.

If I lived in an arid climate I wouldn't mind a battlefield pickup finish. But for me paint = more protection against the elements so I prefer not to have exposed bare metal.

Those circular indentations along the wall of the receiver. Those are spot welds that attach the inner rails to the receiver.

The two "dots" above the dimple in the first post.

The Russian factories often made large ugly marks when spot welding the rails to the receiver. It varied from receiver to receiver.

US receivers often have very uniform and smooth welds. Its just one of those subtle differences.

I like 'em ugly. Ugly is pretty to me.

One day, I'll figure out how to get those same welds. Haha, you know you have a serious spot weld when it has it's own wear mark around the perimeter.

My last welds pale in comparison. I've turned the amperage down as far as I can, yet I still get ruptures in the metal.

My current setup.

I even tried to cheat with a radius shoulder end mill. It would have worked if I had a proper milling machine and talent.

I love the big nasty spot welds.

Never liked how the NoDak receivers had tiny little spot welds that you could barely even see.  I'm super picky about details, so I want the Russian looking welds.

Yeah, there suppose to be large. Like 6mm.

I think it would look better if he applied a little bleach to it.  The wear pattern looks good, but the high points are too shiny.  Too scoured.  Can also mute them with some sloppily applied brass black.

I'm in A-stan right now, and our gate guards have some serious 'battlefield pickups'.  So little finish, they look like they never had any.

Bigger tips on the welder tongs. The little pointy ones that most come with are not suitable for AK rail welding.

I think it was a 50s Russian, I think that was the stamped date I could be wrong but it was a Russian ak47. I swear that mag had been with that gun its whole life, they were wore the exact same.

I like what you would call used but not abused. Little paint scuff here and there that kinda thing.

Not a big fan of the chromed out BFPU look.

I had this one in my room in Afghanistan the first time I was there.   I got it after our guards on the compound turned weapons on the camp manager for firing the head guard.   They were  replaced and no one was harmed fortunately.   I always kept a weapon in my room after that.   I started to chop it up and bring it home with me but had to go to leatherneck before exiting that trip so it didn't work out.
