I am doing a 922r conversion on my Egyptian Maddi RPM.  I am having trouble with getting the OEM wood off.  I took 3 screws out of the thumbhole stock - one above the pistol grip and two through the tang in the back a t the top of the receiver.  I pounded on the stock, but it won't budge.  Maybe it is a super-tight press-fit into the receiver, but after sitting in a heated safe for 17 years, you'd think it would be loosened up.  Am I missing something, or do I just need a BFH?  I also don't know how to get the wood off of the gas tube.  The lower handguard is off, and the gas tube assy is off - there appears to be ears from a spring clip of some kind that hang over the underside edges of the upper handguard.  I read somewhere that the wood rotates for removal, but I can't make it budge.

Any and all help is appreciated.  Thanks - JayC

rubber mallet. Beat the top and the bottom. It will eventually make it's way out. Or get drastic and find a big screw driver and try to pry it out from inside the receiver, but you have to be careful doing that. Usually gouges the wood.

I had one like that. The original owner epoxied the stock on at the receiver.  I ended up cutting the stock off just behind the upper screw tang.

I had to drill a 3/4" hole through the stock that was left in the receiver and chisel the rest out.

I have always removed the pistol grip, then removed the stock screws. Then I kneel down on the carpet, holding the rear of the recevier between my knees. Then I put a large socket wrench extention into the receiver touching the stock. Then I wack it with a rubber mallet a few times. Not a pretty sight, but it works every time.

OK - thanks - sounds like a BFG is the solution.  It's a new gun - never fired, just tossed in the back of my safe 17 years ago after I bought it.  I'm replacing the stock/grip/handguard with US made ones, along with a US FCG.

Speaking of handguards, does anyone know how to get the gas tube wood off?  Mine won't budge, so I want to make sure I'm going in the right direction before I really push on it.

+1. The rubber mallet- alternating top the bottom worked on my Maadi.

I just go straight to the "big screwdriver method" - because it works...  The wood that gets marked from the screw driver is the stub that is inside the receiver - so it won't show.

For the handguard, I put the end of the gas tube (the end that goes towards the rear sight base) in a bench vise and clamp it down snug.  From there the handguard rotates off the tube.  Many are tight as all hell.  There are youtube videos showing how its done.

Mine surely is.  What about the clip.  Is that connected to the wood or the tube (IOW, do I have to squeeze it to rotate)?

Edit: Incidentally, here's what is currently left of my Maddi:

Thanks again all - JayC

the clip just sits in a cut out in the wood. Just twist and it will come out with the wood.

Thanks!  I'll attack it later on.

Yes....50% of the cursing I've done over last 6-7 years has been while fitting AK stock sets. Being that I want it perfect was a contributing factor.

Thanks!  I like the blacked-out look, but there IS something about the look of the crappy wood furniture that I miss :)

The longer sight radius on the 20" barrel should give you some good accuracy. Nice AK.

I had trouble on one as well and ended up having to use a screw driver and pry it open from the inside!
There was no other way!!!
