Why si the AK74 Front Sight Base and integral compensator so much different from the AK 47?

Can you be more specific?

I often wondered if the muzzle brake is needed on an AK74,, it has the recoil of a BB gun. Makes me wonder if a slant brake will do the job?

To answer your question OP.

From my understanding the Russian doctrine is to fire short burst in Automatic. The muzzle brake reduces muzzle climb keeping the rifle on target.

I don't know, but can only assume that the 5.45 round produces enough gas/pressure to really take advantage of the '74 style brake.

Well the 74 brake is far more effective then a slant brake. Slant brakes don't really do jack for you when shooting semi-automatic imo, only when shooting full auto. The 74 brake is more effective regardless.
The 74 brake takes muzzle climb to near zero on 5.56 and 5.45 AKs, it's beautiful thing. Of course, it is also wonderful with 7.62x39, all the 7.62x39 AKs that Russia produces now use a 74 brake.

What about the AK103? I thinking the muzzle brake is all about controllability during FA fire.

Ever fired an AK74 without a muzzle brake? The difference is negligible.

true, but it's very noticeable on a 7.62x39 rifle.

The 74 comps have a boost chamber, designed to improved full auto cycling under adverse condition, sub zero temps etc... Krinkovs use the same principal on the muzzle devices, not so much a flash hider, but a booster first and foremost.

Never fired a 5.45 ak but watching videos online it seems like it's just a low recoil round even without the 74 style break on the end. My SLR 106 has one and it seems like the recoil is less than that of my AR. I have fired a sgl 21 (7.62x39) with a 74 style break on it and it seemed to have less recoil than my Mak 90 with no muzzle attachment

IMO, 5.45 and 5.56 have extremely similar recoil and while doing slow single shots the brake is not going to make much of a difference at all, but it sure does help if doing rapid fire drills.
