So I wanted to find a way to simulate pine tar without using pine tar.
So I mixed some dark brown and black rit dye to get a charcoalish stain that will make the wood grain pop. I applied it to the wood then let it sit for 30 seconds and wiped off the access. For some I did just that and no stain afterwards. For others I used some stain over the "tar" stain. Just experimenting here. Thoughts ? Simulated pine tar and amber shellac.

I really like the dark furniture on the Polytechs. For years (back when the Chinese AK was pretty much all there was) I tried to replicate that color. I even worked at apaint store for awhile and managed to come up with about 20 different mixes, but never was ale to get it quite right. |

I have a chinese PG that I bought separately from a stock I got on eBay and they don't quite match
The stock is the common chicom orange color and the PG is a darker but still bright orange so I figured I would refinish the grip to match the stock after no luck with trading for one on the EE. If I just strip the PG and use amber shellac will that get it close or do I need to bleach the grip first? |

NOS Polish lower HG Romanian Non-G buttstock I am still waiting on Set # 2: NOS polish upper and lower HG + NOS polish gas tube Romanian Non-G buttstock Here is today's haul 
I'm going to stain this set and leave the other set NOS as I'm hunting for the elusive NOS polish buttstock. |

I have yet to ever see a Polish buttstock for an AKM personally. I gave up for a long time and ended up trying to find a Romanian buttstock to match my Polish handguards. They werent NOS by any means so i had to find a darker set. I think i matched them pretty good but an actual Polish buttstock would be nice.

IIRC: Scarlet powered rit dye - 1/3 of pack Dark brown rit dye - 1/2 of pack A pinch of black rit dye. Mixed it all up in a jar with denatured alcohol. Then strained it through a coffee filter into another jar. I put more coats on the stock as the hand guards were darker off the bat. I topped it off with some amber shellac. |

The mailman came today
Here is my complete set from z_recto. I am not going to touch this set, might not even fit it at this point, just put it in the safe. 
Why? Well I have a polish handguard set coming which I'm going to mate with this(which also came today) 
I wanted a set for a traditional PMKM clone. I also wanted a set to use for my practical PMKM clone build. I'll be adding a MI qd sling mount to the stock and adding a MOE rvg to the handguards which should arrive tomorrow. |

I really didn't like the look of the wood that came factory on my CAI PAP M70 and the cheek weld was painful.
I bought a M76 stock from AWO, and a M70 hand guard set from Apex and this was my first attempt at refinishing. Basically cosmoline removal with heat gun and mineral spirits, sanding down a bit, finish sanding, then 6 coats of tung oil.

Hello gents, I have been glancing at the forum for awhile now and I finally joined. Well here goes. I have spent hundreds of dollars and many hours trying to recreate that authentic Soviet laminate finish. Not only do I want it to look "real" I would like to keep the proces as authentic as possible. I know a few guys have came very close if not spot on and I know the few that have a finished formula make profit with it so im sure they cant divulge to much of their secret. If anyone can steer me in the right direction with any info it would be much appreciated. I dont want and rit dye or BLO or tung oil jobs, Only pine tar and shellac recipes. So far I have light pine tar and amber, garnet, thai, and kusmi button lac. I have tried the feibings leather dyes to tint them but them dyes are to dark Its just not coming out right. If I get the color close, its to loud compared to the real "transparent dark" colors of the Soviet wood.
I know the Soviets used 'pine tar". When I recieved my pistol grip from Soviet surplus it smelled the barbeque sauce,(pine tar). I only have tested on birch pieces of wood since I dont have spare laminate to test on. I have the "light tar" which comes out looking the same hue as amber shellac. I am trying to acheive that orange color exactly as on Tantals website or like on TXzen Arsenal SGL-31. Can anyone tell me what I am missing here? I have not tried Transtint yet since its so expensive, and everyone that has come close seems to use that but I know the Soviets didnt use that so there has to be a way to get the finish without it... If anyone would like to email me with a few tips [email protected] I would really appreciate it. Im becoming obsessed with Soviet laminate, it is just amazing the finishes this wood has and its impossible to really appreciate it until you have tried to recreate the finish. |

I know it's not the orange I'm trying for but I would be happy with any of the original colors as long as its correct. The handguard is an Egyptian. Does this look authentic Soviet or more like an Egyptian or Romanian color?? Thanks for any input. |

Thanks, I was wondering if anyone ever tried the "red" pine tar??? I seen that on eBay. It's the same Swedish stuff but it just says red... I wonder if a red tar with an amber shellac top coat will give me the orange I'm trying to achieve... Ruby shellac will be here in a day or so. I'm curious what Will come out of that color. So far I'm disappointed in the colors flaked shellac has given so far..
Another idea I'm about to try is, since the light pine tar is very close in color to amber shellac I'm gonna try dying the pine tar.... Add red dye to the golden color of the pine tar should give that red-orange-brown color. At least I hope . So far it looks like the Feibings leather dye is mixing with pine tar quite well..
