As requested. Please forgive my impromptu white background. 1970 AKM build from a Tula kit (built by POHF). I read somewhere that the darker shellac finishes such as this were a characteristic of the Tula Arsenal, for whatever reason.

This was a standard unfinished WASR that I refinished awhile back. It was a combination if "wine" and "scarlet" rit dye. I used tung oil as a finish. I picked up a set of old romy g furniture that I am currently refinishing, cant decide on a color, will post pics when finished.

I wish I could remember where I bought that kit but it was brand spanking new... not a mark on it... It was in such good condition I had it built by matching the receiver to the existing finish, no blast and paint. That wood is original to the kit. Sold the fixed stock awhile back... got that stock set also fresh out of the plastic sent from Poland when there was some guy on here selling direct. It was beautiful. *edit... I have solidified my plans for the stock set.
Going to use: Denatured Alcohol mix - yellow, orange, brown, red rite dye - what amount of each is TBD. Since I'm going for more of the orange-honey-brown I might not use any red. Once I have the mix ratio at my desired levels - after testing on spare wood I'll mix that with some shellac - both amber and clear - to determine which I like better. Then apply the chosen shellac mixture to the bare wood - soviet style. I would like to use the pine tar method, and will on a different set of wood, but for now I'm going this route. my goal is to replicate this rifle - however when it was arsenal fresh

Here's some RPK furniture with a Romy dong handguard fitted. Wood was stripped and hit with 4 or so coats of amber shellac with Sunbrurst Rit Dye. 
Mustangduckk Jr (age 3) helping out! 
I've posted this pic a bunch, but its the best true representation of the color of the wood on my Tula Krink. My other Krink kit that I parted out had darker wood on both top and bottom.

I can't for the life of me figure out what I did to dye this one. It might have been a Rit Dye mix. I think the clear is from spray on Polyurethane, about 8 coats or so.

Last night after "date night" with Mrs. Finslayer, instead of coming home and being romantic.....I decided to mix up a bunch of rit dye formulas.
I ended up with 6 different ones using the following: - orange powder - yellow powder - brown powder - denatured alcohol - home depot bought amber shellac (which I cut with more DA to thin out). I made a stain board, but since its pine, it did not reflect what I would end up with on laminate. This morning I sanded down my "project stock set" and an extra dong I had and go to work. I decided on the mix I labeled "Iodine #2" - I will be using this on my new set once it arrives (hopefully this week from Apex) the kit consists of a NOS polish lower HG, and a non - G buttstock. For that set, I will chemically strip and really get the wood nice and clean before I stain. On this set, I didn't care so much and just wanted to see the color on some laminate. Iodine # 2 is my take on the Soviet Honey Brown finish, I wish i would of kept track of the ratios of dye, but i was doing the eye ball method of measurement. Here is the wood sanded down: 
I applied the finish to the bare wood - in theory as the Soviet would have. 
Just for the sake of science, I used my "orange-red" on the extra dong

I have always been a fan of the russian red looking stocks. I took a wasar and came up with this:
Dremelled the welded muzzle nut off and replaced it with a US made slant brake. Buffed the parkerizing off the bolt. Sanded the wood down with thicker, then finer sandpaper till the original finish was removed. Picked up some dark hickory stain and wood putty from home depot. Worked in the putty to the gouges and over some of the trim nails in the buttstock, then re-sanded. Applied 3 coats of stain since the wood sucked it up so bad on the first coat. Reassembled. The only thing I'm looking to do is fill in some of the engraving marks with white, thoughts? |

I'm thinking I'm going to add a few more coats myself to the Galil wood and then a shellac. That being said, you can polish a turd, but it's still a turd. That HG I bought knowing it was beat to hell and anything I did would only improve it, but it's still never going to be a display piece. |
