I recently acquired a Romanian WASR-2 5.45x39. I noticed that the muzzle had a cap on it that was spot welded. I cut the weld and removed the cap to find threads underneath. The threads are left-hand because I had to turn the nut clockwise to loosen/remove it. After research, I assume it has a standard AK-47 thread pitch of 14x1LH. Is this correct?
I want to add a proper 74 muzzle device and the only one I could find was made by Tapco (AK0679), but it appears to be for the 7.62 AK-47. I already bought it (before doing more research) but my question is, will it work OK on a 5.45x39 gun? |

As far as I know, to have a "proper" AK74 muzzle device would mean you would have to have a 24mm FSB that would allow you to attach true AK74 muzzle devices. However, Romanians use a 22mm FSB, and those muzzle devices are a bit harder to find. I believe CNC Warrior makes them. You can just keep using the standard 14mm threads and attach any number of 7.62 muzzle attachments that should work fine with a 5.45 round. They do make adapters that will allow you to go from 14mm to 24mm. EDIT: After looking at the TAPCO muzzle break you are talking about...yes, it should work fine. I have an Arsenal SGL-21 7.62 and SGL-31 5.45, and they both have the exact same muzzle break. |

Thanks for clearing that up. I did read that the Romanian 22mm FSB are hard to find/expensive, and I really do not want or need to change the FSB. I guess I don't need a 'correct' muzzle device, but the Tapco device looks just like a real AK-74 device and I am OK with that. Just wanted to make sure the brake would indeed work with the 5.45 round. |
