I need a dirty nasty work gun with cheap ammo. I know nothing about ak74's besides 5.54 being cheap. This gun needs to go bang every time, be accurate out to 100yds, and take standard mags / furniture . Outside of that i dont really care.

What should i buy?

Something used and cheap.

TGI Truck Gun
Polish Tantal
WASR-2

I don't think any of these are still in production, but they come up fairly often used and any one would fit the bill.  The Tantal may need some work to make standard furniture fit because it comes with a factory wire sidefolder, but I suspect it can be done.

I actually contacted TGI about this very rifle about 2 weeks ago.   They stated that this rifle is their current model of the old truck gun.   Bad news is the new one isn't chrome lined and costs a lot more than when the old one was in production.   Damn economy!

No really cheap 74's in production. If you can build your own that is the way to go.

If you can find one, buy a Saiga IZ240 or an IZ340 and convert it yourself.

I was just going to suggest this.

In reality, if you just want functionality above all, just install a bullet guide on one of these bad boys and leave everything else stock.

Sure you wont have the pistol grip, but you have a fully functional rifle that can accept standard '74 mags (w/bullet guide installed)

The problem is finding them

why does it have to be an ak-74?

Cheap. Easily stackable ammo.

Used WASR-2 or Polish Tantal would be my bet.  I have one of each and they are reliable.  My friend & I bought 4 Tantals together and they are all shooters with no keyhole issues.

Tantal needs no modification to fit a different stock. Just remember to punch out the two pins that hold the folder in. You will however have to live with mismatched upper and lower hand guards. The tantal has a proprietary upper hand guard/hand guard retainer and they rarely match the lowers.  I think you can get black though if you want to make it evil. Also, century tantals don't have chrome lined barrels if that matters to you. All in all a nice shooter though, and for a while they were the cheapest 5.45.

i think the same can be said for 7.62x39.  mags are cheaper and easier to find too. just saying.

Another vote for tantal. Atlantic firearms as chrome lined barrels on theirs.

17.5/rnd delivered versus 24.0 /rnd delivered as of today. Assuming you dont mind buying Promags or bought ak74 mags when they were $20 or less, 5.45 is the way to go and is cheaper at $65 per thousand less. Buying 6500 rounds of 5.45 instead of 7.62x39 saves you $422, which was enough to buy a NIB Saiga 5.45 rifle 4 months ago.

I was actually thinking about buying an AR mag adapter and running $13 ASC mags in my last unconverted Saiga

I went all in to 5.45,  to shoot in both 5.45 AKs and a 5.45 ARs, last year and was buying 4K rounds a month at 14.0/rnd delivered for a while when OT allowed it. Ive got a lifetime supply of 5.45 currently at the rate I shoot now. But I'm looking at 5.56 prices and thinking I'll just buy more 5.45

This is why. I think the AR in 5.56 is a superior platform (insert weeping and gnashing of teeth here) but with my current fiscal situation I'd rather buy a serviceable platform with readily available and cheap ammo so i can train harder and stack deeper. Its the indian not the arrow philosophy.
