I really want to improve the sights on my AK with a longeradius peep, but I don't want to do a full cover system like the TWS  dogleg, and i don't like the look of the tech sights. I was thinking putting the side mount to use with a peep would be a good solution, but I've never seen that kind of setup.  Anyone know if these are available, and from whom?  Failing that, what about a clever work-around?

That's kind of a cool idea there... I don't know of any out there already made, but with a little measuring you could probably sort it out. I'm thinking the smallest rail you can find with some type of BUIS on top of it from an AR? Tough part will be trying to match the height's of the front with the rear.

I just saw something today actually that you may like.
A guy I was grabbing some parts from had a Draco with an aftermarket dust cover on it that had a peep-site built into the rear. I can't remember who the maker was but I just sent him a message asking about it.
I'll post up the info about it if he tells me.

It would probably be a cleaner install than adding a side-rail, less obtrusive at least. It worked great on the Draco and increased the sight radius by a lot too.

ETA: He just got back to me and told me it was from these guy's:   http://www.tech-sights.com/ak.htm

I think the Tech Sights are pretty much what you're looking for. Any kind of BUIS would most likely be too high to align with the front sight.

There was a prototype a guy made a few years ago that would have been perfect for this kind of thing. Instead of attaching via the side rail it was held in place by the tang screw and had just enough rail slots to mount a rear BUIS just behind the dust cover. I know the guy made at least one prototype, he posted pictures. I signed up for beta testing but I never heard anything more.

The tang screw, that's an idea.   My thing is, I don't want to rely on something movable that could potentially lose zero (like a dustcover-mounted system), and I don't want something that will interfere with the normal operation of the dustcover...  The techsights look like they'd work really well, but I've heard you need at least three hands and a special tool to remove the dustcover.  If I could just use the side mount to get a peep sight low enough...   I'll look more closely at the tang screw option as well.

I have thought about a rear trunion with a AR type sight welded on far enough back so the bolt carrier can come out. The recoil spring would just fit into a round hole in the sight. Dust cover would a TWS/tech sight hybrid.

Yup, there is a five page thread about it over on the AK Forum.  Whole project just kinda died on the vine.  Pic from that thread:

Maybe one of these mounted horizontally from a side mount?

http://www.aimsurplus.com/eos/images/product/XKA25650.jpg

It would still be adjustable, but windage would equal elevation and vice versa.  Looks like I have about 13.5mm of vertical real estate over the dust cover to center the peep, so I think it might fit.

ETA-  I'm going to run with this idea.  Give me a couple of weeks to order parts and mock it up, I'll check back.

Have you tried opening up the width of the current blade rear sight?  I have done this on a number of rifles with crappy rear sights and will do it on my AK soon.  I find that a generous amount of light on either side of the front post makes a huge difference on shooting comfort/ eye strain/ speed of sight usage (with no degradation in accuracy).  I just bought a cheap needle file set from the bargain bin at an auto parts store.  I found I generally like a .100" - .125" wide notch.  If you want to scrap the rear sight anyway, may as well give it a try.  Contrary to popular belief the human eye doesn't need a narrower notch to shoot more accurately.  It just needs good light do to what it is designed to do.  This is the newest thing that Jim Fuller is selling people on for his AK builds.....completely valid and works, but you can do it yourself in 5 minutes with a discount needle file set. People have been doing this on handgun sights for years. YMMV

Yes, that's it!  I was disappointed that it never went into production, it seems like such a good idea.

Not a peep site, but it would be really cool to try a diopter on a side mount rail:

Centurion Rail Mount Diopters

You could try a little dirt cheap AR peep sight:

Aim Sports a2 sights
You can find these as low as $15 if you go for the fixed version. I really prefer the LaRue BUIS for a rear AR style Peep.

You could mount it on one of these dirt cheap ($18 shipped) side mount rails:

Cheap airsoft crap side mount rail
Of course, this is airsoft junk, but if it's experimental you can always spring for the real deal later

If you did't need the longer sight radius, the Mojo peep is where it's at.

My thinking would be to buy the cheap junk to experiment with. Maybe try shaving down/shimming up the rail and sight and welding them together to get the height correct.

Good luck, post pictures when you do something!
