I was cleaning my Arsenal SGL-31 after shooting some corrosive ammo and noticed there is a slight wobble toward the base of the gas piston.  The picture shows a little space which is not on the other side.  I've put roughly 500 rounds through this rifle.

Is this normal?  Question answered.  Thanks everyone.

Thanks for your help!

normal, every ak I've ever owned or played with has had a bit of wobble where the piston meets the carrier

The gas piston was designed to wobble, that's the way Mr. K. designed it. It lets the piston "float" through the gas tube and comensate for any slight mis alignment with the gas block. Some AK's pistons are tight and slowly losen up others come new with the wobble. I want my piston to have some wobble and have even drilled and repinned them to get the wobble.

I have 1 that does and 1 that doesn't, both are Arsenals.
I was a little worried when I got the one that wobbles, especially since my first one didn't, but after some research I discovered it's normal like these guys have said.

Gas piston wobble is necessary to create perfect alignment with gas block.

You seem to be missing the gas piston rivet.

Are you able to unscrew it from the carrier?

It's retained by a punch press on both sides. This is the standard method of retaining the gas piston and barrel components on all new Russian AK's.

I see - thanks.

The punch looked like a hole to me.
