Did all of the wood on my newest ak and it turned out extremely nice but I hate the finish that is on the receiver/dust cover etc... Very rough and not all that durable to say the least.  It feels like 600 grit sand paper when you rub your hand on it.

What's the best method to put a nice finish on it?  I'm not looking for some high gloss or crazy paint job I just want something with a smoother texture and more durable, so basically no spray paint or duracote.  I guess I've just been spoiled with my norincos and Yugo that my standards are high

Which AK do you have?

Century polish underfolder. Very nice rifle for the money. Nice dimples, the stock locks up tight but the finish on the dust cover can come off from scraping it too hard with your finger nail. I really like that slick feeling matte finish my norinco has. Any way to replicate that?

If I'm not mistaken, your Norinco is blued, not painted. You could blue your rifle after sand/media blasting your gun, but I would probably stick with a bake-on finish like Norrell's Moly Resin, Cerakote, among others.

I don't have the means to sand blast myself, how much would it cost to send it out to be refinished

About $200 or so.  Depends on who does it and what finish you go with.

Jeff at Orion Firearms (NC) does really nice cerakote work.  His prices are good (under $200) as well.  He has a milled MAK on display at his shop which he did in graphite black, and it's really nice.  The photo on his site doesn't do it justice.
