If you have your heart set on making it "modern" - please use the G, not the Norinco. Can you expand on this? I don't know a lot about ak variants. The Norinco is collectible, the G not so much. Turning a Norinco into an AR wannabe would be blasphemy in the eyes of AK aficionados. Personally, I could care less, it's your rifle, do what you want with it. Az |

Actually those newer Romanian style rifles have the makings to be easily modernized. M10 I believe? They already have the shorter gas system, railed handguards, and you can drop any stock you want if you don't like the side folder on them. I'm actually thinking of picking one up just for this.

I bought an RPK instead because i knew they were drying up but i think i might bite on the AMD again. While i hate tactical AK's in general, i think the AMD is the only one i would consider doing it to. I didnt even know that website existed either. Thanks ETA: i also shot a buddies decked out AMD lately and loved it. The cheek piece thing for the side folder makes a world of difference too |

If I were you I would take that romy G and add a ACE receiver block & modular folding stock($170) and a Ultimak gas tube rail($98) along with a micro red dot sight like the Bushnell TRS-25($100). If you want to lighten the gun up add a Bolton gas block/front sight and cut the barrel down a few inches, have it threaded and have a long enough flash hider permanently welded on to make it the legal length. Besides a more ergonomic grip and a light everything else is just for looks.

Great viewpoint. |

Can you expand on this? Advantages and disadvantages of each? |

While the gun in the picture does look cool. I would consider what is going to work best for you. You can clone his rifle easy enough but before you do look at your options to decide if something works better for you and may even be cheaper. I've built a couple tactical AKs. Basically I wanted to make them a little more practical in multiple settings. On mine like in the picture I also wanted it short and I also used an optic mounted on an ultimak (Eotech would sit high). The micro optic with Ultimak works great I decided against the Bulgarian Gas block because it just cost more $ and the other setup works fine (I like fuctional and not just to throw $ at it) You can use the gas block and sight off the Romy G or drop another $120ish just for the front sight. I built mine with a bulgarian sidefolder to allow it to be as compact as it can (adjustable stock wouldn't be bad though), I don't need a mile of rail with nothing on them so I modified a set of bulgarian handguards to take a Magpul MOE grip (short). I also wanted 7.62 vs 5.56 in an SBR sounds like you are doing the same. The other thing a practical weapon needs is a light. I'm not saying you can't hit what you can't see, It's just a lot harder. A good light is needed. Anyways enough of my dragging on. http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m193/trentfroebe/DSC01167.jpg Why would I change the front sight and gas block? Is it to make it a folding setup? I am really just wanting to slap a new handguard, stock, light and red dot on it. |

The rifle that Costa is shooting in your pic looks like an SBR (barrel shorter than 16"). If you are wanting it setup like the one in the pic, this is what you would need: Gas Block/Sight combo: https://www.venomtactical.com/shop/gas-block-p-72.html Top rail: http://ultimak.com/M1-b.htm Bottom Rail: http://ultimak.com/ACR2.htm Vltor AR stock adapter: http://www.vltorstore.com/products/AK47-Modstock-Adapter.html Other accessories include: Magpul CTR stock Aimpoint T1/H1 Magpul rail covers Krebs enhanced safety PWS muzzle brake ? I personally wanted to keep mine as "AKish" as possible and am opting for something like these: http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j49/jakeums/010.jpg http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j49/jakeums/01.jpg Good call. I didn't see that until you mentioned it. I don't want to cut my barrel down. I want to do this as cheap as possible. |

OP, I'd use the Chinese AK if you were going to put your life on the line with your rifle, if it's just for plinking or competition, I'd use the Romanian.
I've have AKs that were assembled from kits and they were slightly less reliable than factory AKs that weren't assembled outside of the original factory. One of these (Kicklite stock) just came in the mail a few weeks ago. For $75+ shipping it's hard to go wrong on a recoil reducing 6 position AR type stock. I haven't had the opportunity to shoot the gun yet, but I mounted the stock, and I've pretended to shoot the rifle and it absorbs my pretend recoil pretty well. http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/411548149/Phoenix+Technology+KickLite+AK+Tactical+Stock IDK what kind of trigger is in your AK, but you should have at least a Tapco trigger group that you polish. They can be smooth as glass with very light trigger pull. It's really very impressive compared to the crap triggers that come with a lot of stock AKs. http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/49633/Tapco+Single+Hook+Trigger+Group You can easily take out and install your own AK fire control group, with the help of one of the aftermarket shepard's crook replacements. If you have help, you don't need one, but for $5 or $10, it's really a good purchase. Also, there are some very effective muzzle brakes that you can buy that are threaded for an AK. They run anywhere between $30 and $200. You can check out some reviews on youtube. I think with the recoil reducing stock, a polished trigger that's lighter than a stock chinese trigger, and a good muzzle brake you will have a very impressive AK. I don't know much about AK optics so I'll leave that to someone else. |
