First of all, this is in regards to my converted Saiga 7.62.  The bullet guide was welded in as part of the conversion.  The weld is a real bang up job.  It's more of a "melt" than it is a "weld".  They didn't even make the entire line of weld leaving some of the left edge of the bullet guide untouched.  The gun shoots great.  Much more accurate that I was expecting.  It cycles fine and has been 100% reliable with surplus ammo.  Like most everyone, I'd hate to have a problem at the wrong time.  Since it's been 100% reliable, I hate to even worry about it but what are my options?  Buy a new Saiga front trunnion and have a bullet guide reinstalled?  Do AK front trunnions already have the bullet guide?  How hard is it to replace a front trunnion?  Cut and remove, reinstall?  Have a welder build the area up? Dont worry about it.........?

Thanks.

unless the metal or weld looks like it could give, then you might as well shoot it.

otherwise, if it becomes that bothersome, nagging, rage-inducing flaw sitting in the back of your mind, sell on EE

Who did the conversion?

Most bullet guides are held in by just a screw. i would imagine that any decent weld would be stronger than a screw so you are probably better off. Can you show us a pic?

Already converted before they were imported by Mercury Hermes in KY.  I'll upload a pic tonight.  Thanks.

If it works and is solid, what's the problem?

Am I missing something?

It works fine.  I've tried to bend it and shake it and it seems to be solid.  I'm just the type that if it's a weak link I address it.  I'm just asking the forum if they think this crappy weld is going to hold up.

Like I said, I call this more of a melt than a weld.  Seems to be solid but I don't want any doubt that I trust this rifle.

Any repairs methods you can think of or do the ones I listed seem reasonable?

looks solid to me 2 good booger welds on each side.  looks like the welds have been filed a little for bolt clearance I would imagine that would last the life of the rifle.

The picture makes it look like the welds are built up tack welds.  That isn't the case.  The guide actually melted down.

That guide isn't going anywhere, ever. I would trust that more than I would a screwed on guide.

What?  There's MORE than enough weld on that that it will NEVER come loose.

Thanks for all the opinions.  I guess I'm second guessing it bc it looks so bad.  The pictures make it look like there are 2 decent welds.  I'd rather have 2 small tack welds than this.

Are bullets or the bolt going to touch the welds and adversely affect the functioning of the gun? No? Then shoot it, its an AK.

If you care more about how guns look than how they shoot, I can send you to a Sig 556R forum. Ooooh, look at all the pretty guns with their impeccable CNC machined parts. Too bad they don't run worth a damn but they look pretty.

I do shoot it.  Put over 250 rounds through it in the past week.  I demand that my guns are as reliable as possible.  This is why I have CZ pistols and prefer pump shotguns.  When I noticed this bad weld, I questioned the quality and reliability of this firearm.  The pictures don't do it justice.  These aren't mound type tack welds.  The welder burnt right through the bullet guide.  It's so deep I just don't think there's much of the side of the bullet guide actually welded to the trunnion.  It's holding up fine.  Maybe after 500 rounds I'll convince myself it's ok.

It is not OK.
Put it up for sale and see how many takers you'll have.
Looks and workmanship do matter to those who value firearms.

Did builder charge anything for this hack job?
Who's the builder?  Duke-Nukem?

considering thats welding a thin small piece of metal to a large block, thats a top notch weld!
i'd bet you couldn't remove that bullet guide even if you wanted to. short of destroying both parts.

Nope, I didn't build it and I don't care who did. If he wants to sell a working gun because he thinks the welds are ugly, that's his business. My question is, does the gun work or not? If it works like an AK, then shoot it like an AK. Its an assault rifle, not a Browning Citori Supergrade with gold embossed engravings.

I'm pretty sure that Browning Supergrade with ugly welds in place of gold engravings will work as well as any other fudd gun.
