I'm a single sling 2 point kinda guy myself. After doing some training with Russian military types, they've convinced me the KISS principle applies even to slings. To each their though I like to say

necessity is the mother of invention

what works for you in  the field is what's best IMO. The filed is where all theory meets the real world. I have had many applications fall apart from a light day in the field, much less a hard day in the field. If you find a way to do it, it stands up to the rigors of your conditions, roll with it.

Yeah, carrying a full size rifle any distance in the woods is a pita.

I use the Kifaru gun bearer (actually I just made my own copying their design, it's very simple) for backpacking. But for skiing, I could definitely see the double sling being the most stable and comfortable method.

What's the best method for lashing the 2 slings together so your not fumbling with the two if your using it as a single sling?

I live in a similar cold wilderness environment, and I appreciate seeing the pictures, and how you use your gear. Mine looks similar but I use snowshoes in the back country. Thank you for your contribution.

Actually, they stay put quite nicely when both are left on the gun.  However, if you just want one you merely remove one.  It unclips right off the sling loop.  Often, I remove both when hunting with the rifle as a sling is merely in the way.  Make sure to get good hard-spring hooks.

Another method is also one I use, if the rifle has a normal AK military sling on it.  Merely adding another that has hooks.  Both are adjusted for proper length and will allow center-back carry also;

That's what I was thinking I could do is use 2 standard military slings as I have plenty lying around but I may buy some leather ones because I would imagine they would be easier then dealing with the limp canvas slings if your using two as you are but I'm sure both work well.

Thanks for giving me a new Ak project to work on

Thanks for your posts. Very interesting to hear from those using their AK-types every day out in the real world. Very few of us could keep up with you for five minutes on a trek in the wilderness.

I was wondering what was up in your photos in the aks in action thread. If you had a MP40 or Suomi  on your back and wooden ski's it would look almost like you stepped out of  a WWII history book.

I never would have guessed trapping as we have no snow down here. Cool thread.

I really like the sling setup!

What line of work are you in?

Cheers brother, you are living the high life. I'd give anything to get out of this place and move out West to snow country. Good choice on rifles to.

If you notice, all of EVR's gear is very practical for a backwoodsman. 1 pic worth 1000 words...as I said I am in a similar situation. With the mild winter here this year (3" snow) we have been able to travel all the back country at will with no problems. We still can cut firewood from way back in the woods, hunt grouse till the 31st... ice fish the isolated lakes, the coyote pop is very high this year, and our local dairy farmer has been putting out some still born calves in the corn field for bait. Though a scoped HBAR makes for a great varminter over the field, the AK 74 and the buttpack of gear heads back into the woods, or travels in the pickup daily. Though my cabin is on the grid, it can fully function off the grid...ahhhh this is the life. VERY quiet here back in the woods now.

Wow, great post, I really like your set up. I do a lot of hiking and (usually X-CTY & snowshoeing - this year, no snow )

I have the 107 side folder. Its nice when folded since it is so compact. However, with the sling attached, every time I open and close it, the sling gets wrapped around the stock and all tangled. Do any of you guys have any suggestions?
