I have a 'post-ban' arsenal SLR-105 and am in the process of changing the black plastic to blond wood.  Upper hand guard was  SUPER tight and took 2 of us to rotate the wood into position.  Now the bolt/chargin handle will not seat for the last ~2" inches in the reciever.

Did I mess soething up or just doing it wrong?   Is it possiable to crush the metal tube in the upper handguard (with vented holes)?

I would love to just order part # AK-030BV   from K-var and be done, but its out of stock

Did you clamp the tube section of the piston guide tube in a vise and thereby crimp it? Did you not even try to fit the wood to the retainers by lightly sanding on the end lips? Have you never heard 'If it doesn't force, fit it'? How about 'Do not force anything on a gun without knowing what you're doing'?
Seriously, make sure the tube is properly set in the gun - sometimes you have to tap them into place before tightening the side lever. Take the tube out and examine it to see if you crushed it somehow. Original military tubes are hardened and are very tough, but anything's possible.

no vice, just me and a friend... holding in one hand with a towel, and a medium sized open-end wrench to rotate the wood in.  I'll pull it off and look at the metal part i can see, but more than likely the  'take-down' lever is in a bind or not lining up properly, I would assume.

You can get the right gas tube from apex if you have to. It's just a bulgarian 74 gas tube.

pop the tube off and look down it. There is so much clearance that any crushing that would bind the piston will be instantly obvious to your eye.

Thanks for the quick replies and all the help guys!  Exactly the reason this gun forum is my favorite on the web.

Nothing was harmed, nothing messed up at all.... Everything is back together and working perfectly.  The person who sugested to tap down and "make sure its seated" on the top cover was more than likely the winner of this.

Pro Tip of the Day® :  Dont try to take apart and reassembly a gun your not familiar with after a case of beer.  Amazing how simple it was with a clean mind and some simple prolem solving abilties.
