Hey guys, I am from the "other" side of this site.  You know, the one where everybody's guns are black.  I have a friend that bought a Saiga. Having never seen one up close, I thought that was a pretty cool little rifle.  I have the urge to get one, but know nothing.  Here are a few questions that I have.

1.  Is 7.62 the one to get?  I've got enought .223 guns.

2.  How accurate are these?

3.  Is it easy enough to put a scope on them?  What is the aftermarket world like for these?

4.  Magazines.  Can AK mags be made to fit these?  Is it a viable option?

Thanks for the help guys, Looking forward to hopefully getting into this game too.  Thanks, 9080

1.  Is 7.62 the one to get?  I've got enought .223 guns.   Either 7.62 or 5.45.  If it's your first, go 7.62.

2.  How accurate are these?  2 MOA, depending on ammo.  Mine's still more accurate than I am.

3.  Is it easy enough to put a scope on them?  What is the aftermarket world like for these?  TONS of Side mounts, gas block mounts and Dust mount options. You can get a POSP illuminated scope for $170 (mount and scope)

4.  Magazines.  Can AK mags be made to fit these?  Is it a viable option?   You only need to add a bullet guide and file the mag catch (TEST IT FIRST, you may not have to).  If you want to run AK mags, you must be 922r compliant.

You should check out Saiga-12.com.  Lots of Good info over there.

That being said, I tacticooled my first one, then bought an SGL21 and 31 and left them completely stock.  Less is more on an AK

My full conversion (including front gas block and bulgy FSB

Hey purevl2, thanks for the info.  On the 922, I did a search, and saw that there is a list of 20 things.  But 10 can be used.  All I would want to do on this would be to be able to mount a scope, or sight, and use AK mags.  That shouldn't be a problem should it?  Not knowing much, how hard is the 922 stuff to follow?  Thanks, 9080

922r is easy to meet on a Saiga conversion.
You need a new fire control group,go US made.  3 parts
You need a new butstock and a pistol grip,go US made  2 parts
Your good if you don't thread the barrel. If you do thread it,just add a US attachment for your 6th part.
You only need 5 for a non threaded stamped gun.
You can always fall back on your magazine as they are 3 parts if needed.

What if I want to build a piggie shooting gun?  Can I use the "sporter" style stock still on it?  I am not horribly opposed to it, just don't know if it is shitty or what not....
Why do I need a new trigger and FCG?  Is the factory one junk?  So how hard is it to actually get the AK mags to work?  Also where do I go to buy one of those?  Is there a "preferred" Saiga vendor/vendors?  Thanks guys, 9080

Once you plug a 30 round mag in it your breaking the law, unless you change 5 parts out to US.  You can change the handguard, gas tube and use a tapco magazine, if I'm not mistaken.

You're better off converting it.

It really doesn't matter what you want to use for parts or magazines. The sporter triggers in Saiga's are absolutely horrid and you are always better off converting it.
