I may have a chance to get my hands on a Russian AKM imported back in the 80's. |
|
Importing any firearm from the Soviet Union in the 1980's was illegal. A Soviet made AKM would have to have been smuggled into the country.
There were semiautomatic copies of AKMs that were imported from Egypt in the 80's. There were Chinese made AKs that were imported in the '80s as well, but those are not copies of the AKM. |
| I do know it is semi-auto only. Could it have come to the US sooner than the 80's legally? I've only met one other person to claim to have a Russian AK. He also said it was imported mid 80's. I can only take his word on what it is until I see it for myself. Thanks for any info you can give. |

No semiauto AK was ever legally imported into the US from the Soviet Union.
There have been kits made from Soviet AKMs imported and rifles have been built in the US from those kits. If someone built a rifle on a receiver made from a flat, it could be difficult to distinguish from an original (due to the lack of commercial markings on the receiver), except for the lack of the axis pin, if the builder had the fire control marking placed on the receiver. The best thing to do is to examine the receiver for the name and location of the maker and the importer. If you can't find any, remove the handguards and check the barrel for that information. |
