Imo, nothing gained over an AkM but weight.

Its a heavy rifle.

10lbs + and for the price you can get an Arsenal or a 56S etc.

I almost bought one, then found out from two guys who work at my local shop, and both own one...   that they don't reliably feed steel cased ammo.

that's a deal breaker for me, since I don't feed my ak's brass...

if I wanted to buy a non AK-format 7.62x39, I'd go with the sig

I had one and sold it. It was way too heavy for me, and mine didn't actually take all AK mags, just some new Century plastic mags that always popped up the last round.

So I sold it, and bought an Arsenal AK

i have one, and its a nice rifle.  mines been reliable and accurate, and I like it precisely because its not an ak.  if you like the hk platform, its a no brainer....its fun AND cheap to shoot.

Would a registered trigger group (nfa) work in this?

Yeah they'll take an HK sear. A couple guys on HKpro.com have them running fullauto.

And this is the ONLY reason I would ever consider buying one. But registered sears cost too much for my broake ass. As stated, the classic HK MBR design is too heavy. I used to have an HK .223 SBR clone (Vector V-53) and sold it due to the excessive weight. Also sold a super rare Micro Galil SBR due to excesive weight. The Kalshnikov platform is so much better to me.

The weight I can deal with(I just shoot at the range, not carrying my rifles around all day).  But without having a registered sear, I really don't see the point in these rifles.  They can't do anything that an AK can't do for much less money.  If I wanted a "better" rifle in 762x39, I'd get a 556R.

Is the 556r any good?

IMO, Sig rifles are crap. They are to a 55X as a WASR is to a Valmet. Same thing? More or less, but the devil is in the details.

That said, both the SIG and PTR ought to be quite bit better accuracy wise than an AK.

However, so is a $400 VZ.58. Oh yeah, it's also lighter than all three, has lighter magazines, a true last round bolt hold-open, and doesn't suffer from any reliability problems or known issues.
