Per my previous thread I picked up a NOS polish stock set. The set did not have any protective finish on it at all. It was just raw smooth wood.

I needed protection.

So...

I found some iodine and some shellac and made a very very faint color mixture. I applied one coat on the stock, then once dry buffed heavily with steel wool to get all the shine out, but still leaving a protective coating.

Thoughts on the outcome?

Very nice.  How long did you let it dry before you buffed it?

Thanks guys!

I buffed it about 24 hours after I put the homebrew on it.

I've always wanted a nice AKM stock set, but never wanted to spend the $100+ on one. The irony of this is that I've bought enough Bulgarian and Romanian sets and refinished them to get the look, I could of bought a nice set from the get go. Needless to say, the refinished sets never turned out to be what I wanted, just "look alike" sets that at the end of the day were Bulgarian and Romanian sets with some tint to them.

Since I do not have a 7.62 AK at the moment, I have been trying endlessly to decide what to get. I've looked up and down for a SAR-1, which I used to own but regrettably sold a few years ago, but cant find one under $500. I've looked at a couple of Maadi's but they are all going for $700 ish, so for the money I've decided on an SGL-21.

I know the set will not be "correct" for an SGL-21, as I believe (Zen can correct me here) that it is a 74M pattern rifle; however, I think it will look good on it.

So, with a 7.62 AK in mind, I just started browsing the WTS forums looking for a good stock set, initially for a Russian set. I stumbled upon the set over on theakforum for a hell of a deal, and jumped on it. Until I found that set I was eyeing This set. For the price I got the set for, rifle in hand or not, I had to get it, or would hate myself for not doing so.

I'll have the SGL soon, and will post pics once I do, you can count on that. Right now I'm bout to pick up an engagement ring, so the rifle is my "engagement present" for myself.......

As for the homebrew shellac, I picked up a small can of clear shellac from my local Ace hardware. I visited my parents a few weeks ago, and happened to need a band-aid for something while I was there, and noticed a small brown glass bottle of iodine (probably from the 70's), which I took into my possession.

I poured some shellac into a dixie cup, added a few drops of iodine, made a nice honey-reddish color and went to town. I am pleased with the results.

Thanks.

I didn't want to get too much color into it, just a smidgeon of it in the shellac. I thought about using some amber shellac, but that would apply too much tint to the stock and I wanted to avoid that.

I did some testing on a piece of pine scrap wood. I'll see if I still have it lying around to show the color differences.

Its not drastic in difference if I recall, but enough for me to use the iodine mix.
