All guns I work on I check headspace and I do have a question for the gurus here..... Frist what do you consider to tight( I dont mean on a woman) headspace... Im checking on a build my brother in law did and I see that a no go dosent closer or come close to closing and a go closes about half way.... I usually see to much headspace but this is the frist time I see it being tight..... OK no Puns intended......what is you take on the matter... Its an Ak-47 and Im worried since if it was a AK-74 the charge is not as great and not as dangerous so I dont ming test fireing it but since its an Ak-47 Im checking my options...... Give me your input///

Did your brother in law use a headspace gauge when he built it ? If he did you could try using his gauges to see if it checks out. Will it also chamber a round without resistance ?

You are really close to having the "Go" gage fit, it should go in snug however freely. I would use one of two approaches at this point 1, reset the barrel so the "go" gage fits and use an oversize barrel pin or 2, Remove a little material off the back of the locking lugs, you need to be real careful so you remove it eveningly so the back of the locking lugs remain parallel with each other.

Gunplumber has a well written procedure he posted some time ago (in the archives) with the correct drill diameters and barrel pin size along with a whole lot of very informative on all of the pins and hole sizes for AK barrels.

Curtis at Ak-Builder.com sells oversize barrel pins for this mod and you can find these on his website.

Good luck and do not take any shortcuts, this is a very critical part of any firearm build.

If the bolt doesn't close on the Go gauge, move the barrel. It's the only proper way to set headspace.

Yes I was afraid of that I have done a couple with excessive head space and followed gunplumbers and also buildyourownak. advise on the subject. I know how to do it just havent done it with a tight headspace.  I know and preach to much headspace is a dangerous situation but didnt know for sure if to little has the same effect..... I did shoot the gun and it shoots fine and cycles fine but have already moved the barrel and drilled out the pin and ordered it from curtis with the reamer at .302.. My thing was if a gun with to little space could blow up in your face like one with to much space....I very much appricate the quick come back and value your opionions..... Thank you

sounds like you were very close with the go gauge. You could have lapped the lugs just a little which would have been enough. Plus it also has the added benefit of mating the bolt and receiver lugs to each other.

Too little headspace  COULD be dangerous, but is more likely to result in difficulty chambering a cartridge.

Are you using Euro spec gauges, or American spec gauges?
Using American spec gauges in a Eurpopean made chamber can give incorrect results.
