Whats the best 5.45 and do they all keyhole? I've seen tantals for 389 is this a good deal? I hve also seen in a gun shop a standard looking ak74 with wood furniture for 460 is this a decent buy?

arsenal sgl 31 is a russian made weapon it does not get better than this nowadays. unless you love the tantal then buy a kit and have it made by a good smith.

The $389 Tantal will likely keyhole. For about $200 more, get an Interarms AK-74. If you want the best, spend about $400 more and Get an Arsenal SGL-31. The latter two will not keyhole.

The best way to guarantee it will not keyhole is to never get one with a US made barrel.

I know "buy American" and all that other crap, but seriously, it's true. US companies have failed massively on the 5.45 thus far.

my arsenal sgl-31 will make a 5 shot ragged hole at 50 yards with yugo surplus; so no they don't all keyhole

where do you get yugo 5.45 surplus at?  Is it brass case like the 7.62?

I believe the Interarms guns have a US made barrel and I have heard zero reports of keyholing with them.

I did a home conversion on a Saiga. If you can ever find one of those suckers at retail, snatch it up and spend the hundred or so bucks to do the conversion yourself. They're much easier to do than the x39 or 12ga guns.

As the majority of others have said... I'd go for an SGL-31. I have a Romanian Intrac MKII thats been un-neutered, yet retains the Romanian chrome lined barrel, and most of the other original Romanian parts (minus the 922 compliance crap). But... They haven't been imported since about 1997, and I would have taken an SGL if money weren't an option. I'd recomend the MKII if you can find one and its significantly cheaper than the SGL... Otherwise, the Arsenal wins IMHO.

They wouldn't sell if they ALL keyholed.

My Bulgy from CAI works fine, never a keyhole, never a problem.
