So I walk into one of my local shops today to put a Sig P245 on layaway. Just as I was about to fill out the paperwork I noticed a very nice Polytech Legend hanging on the wall. I ask to see it and I'd rate it at about 98%...not new in box due to a few minor stock dings and some finish wear on the muzzle nut, but otherwise looks like it only had a few rounds through it. Came with 3 Poly mags with chrome followers, sling, oil bottle, cleaning kit, manual, box, etc. etc.

I always see a half dozen or so on Gunbroker in the $2,300 range, but they never move.

What's a fair price in the current market?

A lot depends on condition and if all orig. items included, like the box, paperwork ect.
I would not pay that right now.

If it had the box and all the original stuff contained inside...and the gun was about 98% condition...

would you pay $1299 plus tax?

That's a good price for it.  I just sold a SA M7 Classic for right about that price... Lengends usually catch a few hundred more than Classics.

Yes, put it on layaway.

Now I'm just trying to decide if I want to sell something else to pay for it, or just pay it out for the next 90 days.

I'm thinking about letting go of my mint Norinco 84S with a bunch of mags. I've just always felt like an AK should be 7.62x39.

I bought 2 NIB Polytech Legends for $379 apiece.....in November of 1988 and January of 1989. wish I'd never sold them....those were the days

I would go pick it up if I were you. That way when they figure its worth much more, you dont have to pop in there one day and hear " Oh sorry, so-n-so didnt know it was on lay-away and sold it"

I traded my Legend off. Serial number below 250 and it was my first AK. I think I owned it for 16 years. I bought it unfired and it looked so nice that I really couldn't bring myself to shoot it more than once. It shot like a dream and I couldn't wait to get back home and meticulously clean it. I hated the thought of it being a safe dweller when it was born to run....  so I traded it for a NIB SLR-107UR. I didn't have the box or original mags, so it was a pretty fair trade for the two of us. I don't miss it.... I'm smitten by my 107s.

Not worried about that. Went back today to pick up something else and it was nowhere to be seen. I assume because it was in the safe in the back.

I've seen guys post about putting killer deals on layaway, only to get told they needed to pay more for it (because it was "priced wrong") when they went in to pay it off and pick it up.  I'm sure this is rare, but I'd get that rifle in your hands ASAP.

I might have paid a lot but I have one Polytech I paid 1700$ and the other 1300-1400 for an underfolder.

Really Nice. I'm happy for you

Still it's sad that until Politics interfered we could buy this for Hundreds of $$ Less

Never cared for Chinese stamped guns, but the milled Polytech was the first AK I lusted after.

You got a fine gun.

Both Chinese AKs (one legend just like yours) that I owned never looked as good as the ones that I always see pictured.  The legend had a bad finish spot on the receiver and the Norinco had a dinged stock.  But for the price paid were good values.
