I'm curious if there would be any issues changing out the stock rear sight on my Russian SGL-31 for an East German '74 sight.  I was maybe thnking of having these sent to Jim Fuller for modification (widening of the notch and refinishing):

Also, I'm thinking about getting about getting a set of Meprolight or similar tritium sights.  They come in a 1000m version but they say for "AK-47."  Will they work with my '74?

EG windage adjustable 74 sight will work great.

I didn't know it was windage adjustable.  Sure about that?

As far as I know the only thing you have to watch out for is the length of the sight you're replacing.

If it's an 800m sight, replace it with an 800m sight
If it's 1000m, replace it with a 1000m sight

I think he may mean the RPK or RPK-74 rear sight.  They've been offering on the auctions as "East German AK74 Rear Sight" or something like that which has confused a few folks on what they actually are.

Yep, I just got a EG RPK windage adjustable rear for my "G" kit build to keep the front centered.

FWIW, my SGL-21 is dead nuts zeroed from the box, is yours?  I like the AK 100 rear just as well as the older 74 rear, style is just a little different.

Do you have a pic of your RPK sight?  I've seen pictures and they look pretty cool with the red lettering and all.  However, I read somewhere that there could be issues with putting an RPK sight on an AK.  Maybe not?

On my SGL-31, I had to push the drum over to the side a bit to get the windage right.  My complaint with the stock sights (I take it the AK 100 series sights are the grey phosphate finish ones on the SGL's?) is that I'm not getting a very clear sight picture.  The rear sight is really fuzzy, and sometimes the front is slightly fuzzy too.  Could be my eyes, but the sight picture on my Bulgarian AK (no longer owned by me) was much better.  I'm thinking it has something to do with the rear sight aperture, so hence my idea to have Jim Fuller do the modification.  However, I didn't want to mess up my stock sight on my SGL, since it's original to the gun, so I thought I'd pick up a cheap 1000m sight in the event I don't like the mod.

Here's a link to the Fuller mod by the way:

I can see what you mean.  BTW, mine has white lettering and windage scale.  The only issue that you can run into is to ensure that if you have a stock 1000m rear you replace it with a 1000m rear so the elevation will line up.  Some RPK sights have a "N" at the bottom like the fixed rear you have now and they need the slide drum to fit on the hump at the rear end of the sight base in order to get the 300m battle sight position.  The EG ones do not have the "N" or "P" battle zero and end at 100m so the sight is just a little shorter and more compact but allows for windage so your front can be centered.

Try this first.  Degrease your rear sight blade and apply flat black paint or candle soot and check your sight picture.  Match shooters have been doing this for many years.  The gray parked blade is not that great IMHO.  I used flat black model paint and mine is better now.  Trigger still sucks but the sight pix is better.

Where did you put the soot or the paint?  Just on the edges of the aperture or the whole part that faces you?  I might try it so long as its not permanent.  However, it might mess up the Russian spec grey phosphate look.

As for your trigger, install a Tapco G2.  You won't look back.
