If I clean and degrease properly, can I apply Brownells Gunkote directly over the black oxide coating on a WASR 10/63 with acceptable results?

When in doubt.....call the manufacture.

great stuff but it will stink up your house if put it in the oven.

The answer is yes. The manufacturer will recommend sandblasting as a surface prep, but I've had good results without any abrasion. It does have to be clean, though, and it's hard to beat hot water, strong detergent and a wire brush.

I did that to my PSL some years ago.

But the areas where the oxide coating wasn't done well or had tiny rust pits or bare metal spots,  three years later the finish was bubbling with corrosion under it.

Like any paint job, it will only be as good as the prep work you put into it. Blasting and a fresh park job are the best bit of prep you can do before guncoating or applying Moly resin IMO.

Get a heat gun––-heat it up and hit it with some break cleaner till its bone white and dry then coat it.

Yeah ... I was worried about that, too.  I only have my regular house oven to use.  I did read over on THR forums that a guy said if you let the part air dry for several days before oven baking, it doesn't smell.  I wish I knew before I tried.  I would hate for my wife to use the AK on ME because I ruined her oven or made the house wretched.
