I am interested in an AK chambered in 5.56mm and the Arsenal SLR-106FR seems like a good choice. However, I have a few questions about it.

First off, I noticed that the SLR-106FR receiver has a hook on the left side for the side folding stock lock into place with. My concern is that when the stock is in the open position the hook on the receiver will catch on clothing, possibly damaging/bending the hook or ripping clothes. I do a lot of hiking in the state forests and game areas, so this is a big concern for me. Do you think this will be a problem?

Second question, I noticed that the SLR-106FR has a spring-loaded firing pin on the bolt. I am wondering if this is the same spec as what comes on the select-fire version of this (AK-101). If not, are the bolts/carriers interchangable between the SLR-106FR and the select-fire AK-101?

Third and final question. Can I use any muzzle device from an AK74 on the SLR-106FR? I understand that they have the same threading on the muzzle, however I am concerned with the slight difference in bullet diameter causing a problem with things like muzzle breaks and silencers (do they even make silencers for AKM's?).

Thanks,

Mike

You are not going to damage the stock catch.  I may damage you, but I doubt you would have issues with it.

You can use AK74 muzzle devices, however should you choose to suppress, don't expect much from the stock threads in terms of bore concentricity.

Thanks. I did have one more question. Will the SLR-106FR cycle any off the shelf .223 ammo, including the underpowered 55gr Wolf stuff?

Yes, at least mine does. I have run just about everything through it.  The spring loaded pin is to protect against slam fires from the softer primers of commercial ammunition I believe. I do not know if the select fire 101's use the same. Sorry.

Thanks. Just curious, how old is your SLR-106?

I got the 106 with the triangle folding stock. It been great and I have not had any problems since I began using the Circle 10 mags. The 2 stage trigger is nice and it's about as accurate as my ARs. I have not had any issues with cheap brass ammo or Wolf. It's fast becoming my favorite rifle.

Cool thanks! Does the metal stock ones like yours have the hook on the receiver that locks the stock into place when it is folded?

Also, does anyone know if these rifles are at least 26" long with the stock folded AND the muzzle device removed? I understand that they are over 26" with the muzzle device installed but my fear is that they aren't with it taken off (which means they have to be permanently installed to be legal federally).

Thanks again,

Mike

1) The folding hardware is a non-issue, never had a problem with the small hook catching anything and if it ever did it's strong enough it's not going to break. Plus it's angled forward, thick and rounded.

2) The spring loaded pin is to prevent slam fires with soft primers. The FP is mil spec for Bulgarian rifles. The SLR-106 is nothing like the AK-101 other than outward appearence and chambering. It's an AKM modified to shoot 5.56 were the real AK-101 are AK-74 rechambered for 5.56. That's actually true for the 103 too, an AK-74 rechambered to 7.62x39. So what does that mean? Well the Bulgarian 5.56 mags are AK-74 based like the 101 so they work with both. FCG are interchangable between AKM and AK-74 anyway so spares there are a non-issue. Bolt carrier is AKM and any AK-100 series or `74 carrier won't fit, which shouldn't matter because they usually don't break and there's no advantage to a FA carrier. Bolt is AKM and is larger than a 100 series and uses a AKM style extractor; that may be the only issue, finding spare extractors because I'm not sure if a 7.62 one will work. A `74 extractor will fit a Saiga 5.56, 5.45 and 7.62; again those are the closest to the 100 series we have here. In closing that's the info I have from my AKs, SLRs, and Saigas.

3) Yes, muzzle devices for a 5.45 will work with the 5.56. You'll need an adapter to go from 23mm down to what ever the surpressor uses. I'd be a little concerned because it's the FSB that's threaded not the barrel on these rifles so you want to make sure everything is square and you don't get a baffle strike. It's going to probably have to be a custom job getting the mounting set-up.

4) They are 100% legal on a Federal level everywhere. Over all lenght of a rifle is measured with the stock opened, brake removed as far as federal law is concern. Now on a state level I believe some guys ( I forget where) have to register them as pistols or permanently  attach the brake because state law says it has to be measured stock folded, brake removed. In this case the State considers it a SBR but Federally it's not.

5) My 106 eats everything. It's only had 1 FTFeed and that was with Federal VP 50gr hollow point. That ammo has extremely soft brass, short over all lenght, and a light/no crimp. My 106's carrier was literally putting a deep crease down half the case's body. Of course it would fire form out so I didn't catch on until the FTF. It pushed the entire bullet into the case. Steel case ammo has been fine, mil spec brass 5.56 has been fine, other commerical .223 didn't do this and is fine. The rifle prefers 62gr+ ammo.
