So right now I have a MAK-90 and roughly 2k rounds of 7.62x39... I'm looking to get another 2k minimum soon (gun show coming up labor day weekend, hopefully I can score some at decent prices then)
The dilemma is this: http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/Russian_5.45x39_FMJ.html I could get 4k rounds of 5.45 now, keep them for STHF, and get a '74 eventually. Does anyone have any insight as to 5.45 pricing/availability? I know you can't predict the future, but I'm wondering if I should stock up on 5.45 now or get more ammo for a caliber I actually need. |

Watch the ammo section in the AK-47 area. People post deals on ammo all of the time in fact someone found 500 rounds for $115 today.
I had about 4K and some 50 AK-74 mags before I ever got a rifle. I was buying it when it was $210 for 2K. So I stocked up as much as I could afford. To answer your question there are tons of AK-74s and kits, heck even a AR chambered in 5.45 so I think this little round is here to stay. |

There is a possibility but a low probability, the demand and supply is not out of balance like it was 2 years ago when CAI couldn't give 7n6 away or a year ago when RGuns was selling a crate for $210. |

I did not relize that was you who posted that deal. Thanks for the heads up. I don't think the price is going to come back down and if it does its not going to be very much. If you are positive your going to get a 5.45 I suggest you buy at least two crates, worst case scenario you could sell them down the road. I rarely shoot my 7.62s anymore. The 5.45 in my AKS-74 has become my favorite round and go to gun. The recoil is light, it is fast and more accurate on follow up shots with a price that didn't go completely crazy when everyone freaked out. |

I was sold on it after buying an SLR105 for the same reasons as Alvarez...low recoil and great accuracy. It's hard to beat 5.45 imo. At half the cost of 223 combined with reasonable accuracy and the more reliable AK platform, it's the main reason I sold my M4gery and never looked back, especially after getting my AKSU tweaked with the practical AK concept. | I was in WalMart last night, and they got in 10-12 Remington UMC 250 packs of .40 S&W, so I bought 4. Since I didn't have the reserves to get 4 spam cans of 5.45 anymore, I decided to do the smart thing and ordered 1,500 rounds of Brown Bear from AIM, along with some XTM panels I needed. |
