| I'm wanting to convert my MAK 90. What parts are best to change and what parts are best to keep? Who makes the best US replacement parts? I definitely want a wood stock and wood forearm, other than that I'm open to any ideas. |

For US made wood, go to http://www.ironwooddesigns.com/ . Good stuff.
As for the rest, check here: http://thegunwiki.com/Gunwiki/BuildAkVerifyCompliance You can't have more than 10 imported parts from a specific government list (parts not on the list don't count as parts... either for or against the total... go figgur... it IS the government we're talking about). - In the case of stamped AK's in general, that means you need to replace 6 parts with US made ones. If your gun is a milled one, you can reduce that number by one (to 5), since milled rifles don't have a front trunion. Also, if your rifle doesn't have any "muzzle device" and the barrel isn't threaded, and you are not going to change that, then you can subtract yet another part from the total (regardless of weather the rifle is milled or stamped). For a clearer idea of what I'm saying, check the above link. One way of getting where you need to be might be to replace the hammer/trigger/sear with US made ones and also replace the butt stock, hand guards (the upper and lower guards only count at one part) and pistol grip. That would get you to 6 US made parts. If your barrel is threaded, you could replace the foreign muzzle device with a US made one and keep one of the other foreign parts if you like... as long as the total number remains within legal limits. In some cases when you want to retain one more of the foreign parts, you might want to look at replacing the gas piston with a US made one, but that's a bit more involved, so you'll probably want to go with the other items unless you're mechanically inclined and just don't want to use one of the other options. One place you can get a lot of the US made parts (other than the wood) is: http://dpharms.com/ Have fun. |
