I have a WASR-10.  Is the wood treated with anything or is it just stained?  If not I would like to treat it so I don't get stains on the wood or if I accidentally get some gun oil on it.  What is the best/easiest way to treat the wood(I don't want poly or anything shiny) without changing the color.

You could apply plenty of coats of something like boiled linseed oil or tung oil until the wood simply won't take any more.
This takes time, and even then oils and solvents will still stain.
The Soviets applied coats of some sort of satin lacquer-like finish to seal and protect.

Another option is to apply a couple of coats of FLAT poly to seal the wood.
Thin the first coat well with paint thinner to get good penetration to seal the wood.
Slightly thin the next couple of coats to give better brushing.
Usually 3 coats is enough.  If you use a flat, STIR it REALLY well, it settles in the can.
A good poly won't change the color.

Many hardware stores like Lowe's sell a flat brushing lacquer that worked well and is a flat finish.  This drys fast and seals well.

You could use some polyurethane to seal it and then sand it lightly with 0000 steel wool.

I just used murphys oil soap to clean the wood then rubbed on a few coats of boiled linseed oil.

Do you have any pics of what that looks like?  Did it change the color at all of the wood?

I recently got a Wasr 10/63 and after reading a thread on the Romanian forum of this board I got some Minwax red mahogany stain and stained my wood. I just used a Q-tip to apply it so I didn't have to remove the wood. After the stain dryed for a day I put a few coats of Minwax Tung Oil Finish on it . I think it looks great. You can't attach a picture to the email from this board, and I've never figured out how to post a picture so if you email me I can send a picture.

I prefer Linseed Oil on stocks that don't have a protective finish. Not only does it make the wood look nice, I love the smell.

ETA: Here is a Garand that I built and went with the LO.

You will have to host your picture on another web site such as photobucket and copy the direct link to it. Then you have to paste that link in here.
