Not "Wow, somebody actually paid THAT much for an AK?!?", but "Wow, that is an extremely rare model of LEGAL full auto AK!!!" and a pretty good price at that.  With Amnesty Registered Chinese Type 56 AK-47s selling for 25 to 30 Large, $25k for a far less common North Korean Type 58 is actually a pretty good deal.

The Amnesty Registered AK-47 rifles of all types are the Ferraris and Duesenbergs of the AK world, definitely not for everyone...

Holy crap.

I thought transferable AKs went for about 40k.

They did, or at least some were pushing $40k really hard, but prices have come down over the past 18 months or so.  Twenty Five G for this rifle is a great price, even in today's "down" market.

Yeah, when people could ring up the home equity ATM.  When a large percentage are upside down and worried about being laid off, not so much.

No offense to the owners of these AKs, but they are not the types who could afford Ferraris.

Most of the people, anecdotally speaking of course, are just regular folks who saved and scrimped to buy this item.  That's partly why the prices have come down significantly for full auto, whereas not so much for Ferraris.

Actually, in the past few years, the NFA market has been taken over by doctors, lawyers, etc. The market has come down a bit, but the high dollar NFA stuff, is still out of the price range of the average gun owner.

Point taken.  But the difference between the Ferrari and legal full auto market still is distinct.  The former has rich people, and the latter has well to do people.

Still, I know some friends of friends who are just regular Joe's (now broke Vegas house flippers, equally broke construction guys, etc) who were in this market.

That North Korean Type 58 has changed hands about three times in three years.  I think many of its original owners find that the novelty of it wears off when they shoot it a bit and realize they're shooting a museum piece.  Then they sell it to the next guy.

For me it isn't coming up with the price of the rifle and succesfully getting a tax stamp, it would be afording all the ammo I went through shooting the barrel out of a papered gun!(I would almost consider this rifle the holy grail of Vietnam bringbacks)
