I am trying to install a mag release, got it from midway mag release It says to use a 1/18th drill bit. I am just worried that i am forcing it to much as the bit does not go through the original mag release.
Anyone have any tricks or ideas? I want to ask before i really screw something up Also, How do you take out the original mag release? do you use a punch? (I am thinking that if i take it out it might make drilling it easier) Thanks for the help in advanced. Funshot |

Also, How do you take out the original mag release? do you use a punch? (I am thinking that if i take it out it might make drilling it easier) The magazine release pivots on a rivet. Reinstalling a new rivet will be much more difficult than drilling a hole in the magazine release. Is your bit sharp? Are you trying to drill it with a cordless drill? Get a new bit and a corded drill. |

Drill it at slow speed with some lube (any kind of oil) as well. If you drill at high speed you will heat up the bit and ruin in very fast. I regard drill bits as expendable. that's why I own more than one of each size. Drill at high speed and don't lean on it. Let the bit do the work. Put some light weight oil on the piece if you want. If the bit is dull when you're finished, drop it in the trash and buy a new one. |

1/8" bits are definitely expendable but I've smoked them before I finished one hole before when I drilled to fast. Doubt that would happen on the mag release, just think it's good practice. Smoke a $35 dollar bit and you'll remember =)
Just a silly question but your not in reverse are you? |

By "forcing it" i mean the drill bit (sorry i am notorious for leaving out detail), i actually saw the thing start to bend under the force. Bits will bend some without breaking, but I don't recommend that you push that hard, since you don't get any warning before it snaps. Just keep at it. |
