i could use some help, i haven't really done much research for AK's but i've really been wanting one lately. my local shop has some WASRs for $550. but i've been told these prices are too high and wasrs are the bottom line. my question is where can i find an affordable good quality AK (wasr ok) online? henry defense and aim surplus look good are there any others to look for? thanks.

Greetings from a N00b1e;
I am not really sure where to ask this question, so I'll do it here:
I am wanting to buy an AK47 in 7.62x39, and I really don't want to spend over $500.
I prefer a 'traditional' look, but that's not critical.

In 3 days I will be at a gun show, and need to be prepared so I don't buy a 'pig in a poke'.

I don't know anything about trigger slap, milled or stamped receivers and such.
(The only thing that ever slapped me was my .44 magnum <grin>)
I am looking for a unit that is reliable, accurate, and reasonably priced, since I expect to use it for survival one day.

I've read a gazillion opinions and the top contenders in general seem to be;
Russian
Bulgarian
Chinese

Is there a unit that fits my needs, or am I dreaming?
If not what should I buy

Make sure the front sight isn't canted (i.e., crooked).  Minor sight cant is easily fixed with a mallet, a hammer, and a punch set.

Make sure the gas block isn't canted.

Make sure that there is no excessive mag wobble.  (A little bit of wobble is okay.)

Make sure the charging handle functions freely.  It will NOT be smooth like an AR or a bolt gun.  It WILL get "hung up" if you slowly ride the charging handle.  It'll probably sound like there's rocks in the action.

Ask the vendor to remove the dust cover so you can inspect the inside.  Look for rust.  Push on the rails and the ejector to make sure they're properly welded.

Examine the trigger.  Look for a marking that says "Tapco G2" or something similar.  If it doesn't have the G2 trigger (unlikely for a new WASR), expect to get some trigger slap.  A G2 trigger should run around $35.

Examine the magazine(s).  Make sure they are not dented as that can impede the follower and harm function.  Push on the follower to make sure it moves freely.  Make sure the magazines lock securely into the rifle.

Verify the gun is unloaded.  Rack the charging handle.  Put the safety on.  Attempt to pull the trigger.  It should not operate.

While bore condition is important, it's often difficult to check since these rifle usually have cosmoline in the barrels.

Check the box and buttstock for the cleaning kit, a small metal tube, maybe 3" long and slightly thicker than a dime.

WASRs are ugly and unrefined.  The wood will not be finished and the black oxide finish may be splotchy, uneven, and/or scratched.  The wood is easy and cheap to finish.  Refinishing the rifle itself can be done with Krylon, Alumahyde, grill paint, engine paint, Duracoat, hard chrome, or parkerizing.  Generally, the less you spend, the less durable it will be.  If looks matter, a WASR probably isn't for you.
