I want to change the grip to a Hogue ar grip and change the furniture to the Russian red color , can this be done and keep the gun legal ? This is all I want to change on the gun. Any idea who sells the Russian stock sets?

Just keep watching the marketplace - but prepare yourself to spend around $200 or more for a new Russian AKM set.  You'll have almost as much in the furniture as 1/2 the worth of the rifle itself.

If the grip you want to install is U.S. made the changes are legal. The wood stock and handguards on WASRs are not U.S. made, so Soviet made furniture doesn't change the parts count.

If you have wood furniture already, why not try your hand at staining and finishing the wood that's on the rifle.  I'm sure a brief search will turn up which kind of stain to use.  Then, I'd use tung oil for a matte finish or spray lacquer for gloss.  Materials should run you less than $20, depending on the sizes you get.
