Is this the norm for these? What is so special that is makes the kit $1,100.. www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=105387880 |

Dunno, I bought 3 of them from IO when they were $99 each, never even unpacked them out of the boxes they came in. Mine are fixed stock models, don't know the year or anything else, rainy day stuff ya know.... I'd personally value that one @ $400 or less, the hand guards don't seem right for some reason, and the parkerizing looks like it was redone, as other EG kits I've seen were painted, could be wrong though.... |
| That price is pretty exorbitant, but to be honest, that is an extremely rare kit these days. You would be really hard pressed to find one at all, let alone for much of a better price than that. Still they aren't any better than any other AKM kits out there, and if you wanted to make a clone you could cobble together easily available parts and some of the more distinct parts features, like the stock, gas block, and furniture, and make one for a hell of a lot less. But I can definitely see people paying those prices for one. People pay $1000+ for Soviet AKM kits all day long. |
| Definately a high price for a fairly rare kit that doesn't appear quite right. As mentioned, you could put together a decent clone from East German parts (gas block, rear sight, trunnion, etc.). Since the East German MPiKM clone you'd build would still never be quite correct anyway due to a new receiver lacking a few aesthetic things, it wouldn't matter anyway. |
And your expertise in ak appraisals and collecting comes from.........? I have been wasting time following these types of sales for the last 4 years and this is the first complete East German "kit" I've seen for sale. Granted, I may have missed one in that time, but I doubt it. Just remember, to quite a few collectors $1100.00 for a rare example is not a problem. |
