Just wondering if anyone has ever run across a synthetic as opposed to steel lower handguard retainer.

No, they don't exist. They would probably melt.
The Tapco cinder block-style handgaurd has a peice of plastic that mostly covers some of it up, though.

Ah Thanks. After blistering my thumb yesterday I was fantasizing about a fiber impregnated or carbon fiber part. Guess I'll have to take a look at the Tapco
