I recently purchased a SAR2 from a buddy of mine. The end of the barrel has been threaded, it looks like it was done with a kit, not an original. It had a slant brake on it that only covers about half the threads, and then will not go any further. I am trying to figure out the thread size on the barrel so I can locate a brake that will screw all the way down. I tried a brake off one of my other standard 7.62 AK's, too big, literally slipped righy over the threads. I tried a brake off of one of my AR's, too small. Any ideas on what I have here? I thought most of the threading kits were either the standard AK threads or the standard AR threads (cannot recall the numbers) but this is neither.

Thanks in advance.

By the way, smokin' deal on the SAR2. Straight as an arrow, black poly Kvar furniture, 600 rounds of Wolf, and 15 mags for $450! Once I figure out the thread situation, I am going to refinish it with Norrel's moly resin.

It sounds like a bastard thread pattern for AKs, but probably a common one used on everything but AKs. If you go to a hardware store, or even check ebay, you can purchase a thread identifier card that will help you find the size and pitch. It also sounds like the threads are right hand. Your best option will more than likely be to re thread it to 1/2x28rh, provided the OD is still large enough to do so.

AK is 14x1 (metric) left hand
AR is 1/2x28 (standard) right hand

Half way on, huh? Sure it's not a pipe thread?

Seriously, don't worry about it. Put a 22mm FSB on there and make it a 'real' Romanian '74!

So, if I did put another FSB on it, would it cover the already threaded portion of the barrel? I have never replaced a FSB, so I am not totally sure what I'm dealing with. Is it as simple as removing the pins holding the existing FSB on, and sliding the new one in it's place?

Something like this?

Get the Romanian version, but yeah.

ETA: It probably won't just slide on an slide off. It's going to be a little bit of work.
