the bolt fires and ejects the cartridge but does not close all the way@1/2" to 3/4" open

If i take out the mag and hand pull the bolt back it closes all the way by itsself

any ideas, i do not see any scrap or catch marks

It is getting interference from something. Without better info, hard to tell what. sounds like something related to the mag though from what you say.

shoot it with the top cover taken off. when it hangs up you may be able to see a little better.

what should I look for.  I do not belive it is the mag because the bolt will return with the mag in if i pull it back by hand

what type of ak is it?  some builds had to much play in the rear mag latch and the the mag hung to low so the bolt slid over the next round and caused it to not chamber right and jam.

So you know for sure it isn't the mag causing the problem, right?????

Is this a new rifle, not just new to you but brand new?
The only thing I can think of is the bolt is hanging on the hammer, this is common on new or slightly used AKs, and goes away after a few hundred rounds. Try putting some oil or light grease on the hammer where the bolt rides against it.

Sounds like a WASR10, it took about 800-1k rds before mine went completely away.  I am curious what the hell was the actual problem though.

I had a simnilar problem and it was the pin that helps hold the piston on the bolt carrier, it stuck out 1 0r 2 mm  and hung up on the trunnion>  I re seated the pin and have had no further problems
