MIAMI -- AK-47 assault rifles can shoot through a police vest or even through a car, and police said they're flooding Miami streets. Miami's police chief and a city commissioner talked on Thursday about banning assault rifles in the city. They said what they really want is for the federal government to take action. A Miami city commissioner said in 2004 that when Washington gets a cold, a sneeze is felt in Miami. That's how he described the president's decision not to renew the ban on assault rifles. Since then, there has been a 12 percent increase in shooting deaths and two police officers have been killed. "Our police are outgunned and out manned," said Commissioner Marc Sarnoff. Surrounded by police officers and the family of slain Miami Detective James Walker, Sarnoff took aim at AK-47s. An officer in the room held one that had been confiscated from a gang member. "These guns are designed to kill with lethal force," Sarnoff said. "Their place is on the battlefield, not in the city of Miami, not on our streets." Sarnoff said he wants citizens to send a letter, which is available on his Website, to their representatives in congress urging lawmakers to bring back the ban on assault weapons. Walker's family joined the effort. "Please, let's reinstate the ban on assault rifles," said Walker's widow. "Thank you." "If something isn't done, what is a young police officer going to be facing 10 years from now?" said Chief John Timoney. "It will be Rambo becomes reality." Timoney said the 2004 decision to let the ban expire resulted in a flood of AK-47s on South Florida streets. A pie graph showed a jump from 4 percent of shooting deaths in 2004 to 16 percent committed with assault rifles last year. "Our police don't stand a fighting chance against these military-style assault weapons," Sarnoff said. Sarnoff and Timoney said the national ban was reasonable regulation and not an assault on the right to bear arms. |
| Clearly, the best thing to do? Simply exterminate the Civilian Population. Rather than taking a half-assed approach to the problem, the extermination of all Civilians would insure that no Police Officer could be harmed by a gun, knife, rock, razor, or any other weapon. |
This clown is a smacked ass. Are there guns designed to NOT kill with lethal force? Or guns designed to kill with non lethal force? Or, most likely, are you trying to get as many SCARY WORDS as possible in the press release? Guess what Chief my Tokarevs could do a number on those vests too. Good thing the gangs never found out about them. Outgunned and outmanned? Get better guns and hire more police. If the gang members seriously outnumber the police force there are real problems in Miami. But because Miami has a problem WE ALL MUST BE DENIED. How do we fight this other than boycotting Miami as a vacation spot? Everytime this sort of movement starts up we have to combat it and crush it from a grassroots standpoint. Any ideas? Cheers, RWB64 |
| RWB, your on the right track avoiding Miami for spending vacation dollars. Same goes for Chicago IL, etc.... there's lots of places that take aim at firearms being the underlying issues with their criminal problems, it's the easy way out for them instead of owning up to the fact that for whatever reason, their local criminal element is hard at it, and they choose to place blame on the guns and disarm the law abiding citizens creating free fire zones for the bad guys. More and more we are hearing an anti-gun twist in the liberal media, it's gotten really bad lately, and the vast numbers of unarmed citizens in this country just absorb their retoric like a sponge, completely ignorant of the fact that it's criminal behavior at fault. The news lately says it all, college campus shootings, medical offices, all places where guns are banned, have become the free fire zones where nut jobs wind up killing innocent unarmed people, it's going to get alot worse, and sometimes thats just what the ignorant need to realize the reality of a situation. |
| I lived in Miami for about 7 years. The crime had nothing to do with the ban or no ban on assualt weapons- Most of my friends were LEO's. I lived there during the ban as well- crime was horrible then like it is now. Gang violence was out of control and it seemed the cops couldn't do anything about it. Miami is just a violent place- AK or no AK. Thats why I moved away. It's always easier to place the blame on something- rather than admit they have a problem that they can't do anything about. |
All the ban stopped was putting bayonets on rifles, threading barrels and the manufacture and sale of new hicap mags. In other words the ban did nothing to stop the weapons from being on the streets and can't be connected to the problems they have now. |
| This is the usual BS that the media likes to put out.The ak catches it the most because it is cheaper to own.If the ar was cheaper you would see it reported more.If they ban "assault rifles"do they really think this will solve any thing?Criminals will always do what they do,break the law. These stupid laws only affect the good law abiding people who are not out breaking the law in the first place.Like the "no ccw signs posted up",it only prevents law abiding citizens from carrying.A criminal could go get a bolt action hunting rifle holding 4 or 5 rounds of 30-06 and have a much more powerful weapon that will indeed penetrate about any body armor. This is what will happen if the semi autos are outlawed. Then what?Take all guns?Do something with these criminals and stop punishing the honest law abiding citizen. |
btw, here is the link http://www.nbc6.net/news/15305416/detail.html?rss=ami&psp=news (cold) And if that 16% figure for "assault weapon" related murders seems high it is, the figure includes all rifles, not just "assault weapons" |

Riddle me this Chief Assclown: Q: What is the #1 trade that your street gangs engage in? A: The Drug trade. Q: Is this illegal activity? A: Of course it is! Q: Then how can it be happening at all if there's a LAW AGAINST IT? You are proposing that we enact another law to prohibit an item, but by your own admission similar laws prohibiting substances and activities have proven useless in preventing targeted activities. Can you explain to me how this is any different? A: Uhmmmmmm...... Q: Chief, it's a pretty simple comparison, care to comment? A: Uhmmmmmmm..... THOUGHT SO! Look for more of this crap to pound us in the media as we charge into the new adminsitration and beyond. Increased coverage (and conveniently more instances) of Active Shooter scenarios in the workplace, malls, and schools. Increased clamoring for "assault weapon prohibition", and a media only willing to voice the opposing side when the person speaking can be made to look like a whacko. It happened before guys, and the playbook is the same. Saleen |

You see though my family meaning my folks, me, my sister, my 2 nephews. my neice and possibly my brother-in-law were actually planning a trip later in this year to Florida to the Orlando Area. They without me or my BIL took like a 26 day driving trip across the country this past summer. Now I don't know if I can go to Florida or if I should try and disuade them. Do you just hit Miami or the whole State of Florida with a tourism boycott? I went to Commisioner Sarnoff's web site and if you hunt around you can see his lame 46 second "press release", which is not the same thing the OP quoted (OP do you have a source on that?). In it he say Det. Walker was killed by the firepower of an AK-47. I certainly hope they apprehended that AK-47 and prosecuted it to the fullest extent of the law! Glad mine haven't figured out how to get out of the gunsafe, load themseleves and kill me! At some point he says a word I don't understand. I mean I can't tell which of two possibilities it is. If anyone else goes there of can show me how to hotlink it may one of YOU can figure it out. He either calls them "futile weapons" (futile meaning having no useful results, Doesn't seem to work here, bad guy wanted to shoot LEO, it worked.) or he calls them "feudal weapon" (which would relate to a weapon of the 9th to 15th centuries, the medieval period.) That really screws with MY understanding of history. "My Leige, the long bowmen are almost out of arrows!" Send in the AK-47 division!" OK but what action can we take? Emailing Commisioner Marc Sarnoff, Chief Timoney, Maimi Chamber of Commerce, Miami Tourist Board, whomever is the mayor down there? Do we take it to the State as well writing the Florida Chamber of Commerce, Florida Tourism board, Disney (I figure they must have a lot of juice down there), the Gov. of Florida and the Represenative to Washington from Florida? Anybody think of anyone else? Any other actions to take? Would this accomplish anything in the long run? Would any of you write? If I made up a standardized form letter to the various people and organizations you simply had to sign and possibly change a little to make it personal and email would you do it? I CAN write. Dashing off a couple well drafted form letters shouldn't take but two or three days for me but I don't want to waste my time without backing. Any support here? Any help? Any Florida members that can specifically help with correct names, titles, email addresses, and phone numbers of individuals, organizations and their correct spellings? We have all said stuff here. Can I get a consensus to ACT? You know its funny, the poster who said Miami was crime ridden during and after the AWB. They can't clean up their own back yard yet their first response is to not only get local legislation but NATIONAL legislation. They want Washington to tell me what I can and cannot do in Pennsylvania because THEY have a crime problem. So is it yea or nay gentlemen? Cheers, RWB64 |
I don't disagree with you AK47CBR but first off you live in FL which probably carries a wee bit more weight than me calling from PA. And if I tell him my family and I are not vacationing there is he really going to give a shit? Plus depending on how you contact him it might be different. I thought political types used some sort of formula, each phone call equaled x number of people, each email a different number, each snail mail yet another. Plus we, as a group, despite our frustrations, don't want to appear like "gun nuts" or "cranks". As much as I feel the same way, calling or writing and opening with, "Officer Assclown...". You know what I mean? We want to get the point across logically, clearly ,and respectfully even though they don't necessarily do that. If it got any press attention that could work in our favor as they get more hysterical. Are you in Miami AK47CBR? How did you contact Chief John Timoney (phone, email, snail mail, in person)? How did the exchange go? What did you say and how did he respond? VERY interested to hear that. Cheers, RWB64 |

I'm all for law enforcement and support them 100%. But it's always interesting how so-called police commissioners, chiefs, and the one ignorant officer the media always seems to find can make blanket statements like that. Especially when you look at some of the police stations around the country and see the "tacticool" set-ups they have really no need of with officers that have seen too many "Commando" movies. But I digress on that. There's a great deal of hard-working ones that deserve nothing but respect. No law enforcement representative should go in front of the media and say the things that moron did - they're ultimately peace officers and making ignorant statements to the general public in an attempt to "scare" them into agreeing with his opinion was borderline abuse of position. Sadly, he's not alone in much of the law enforcement world as many commissioners would like to keep their officers safe by ridding their areas of any possibility of facing "evil" rifles. Kind of a dark side to their desire to keep themselves safe in the line of duty. As long as irresponsibile individuals continue to hurt/kill people at universities, shopping malls, and such using the same weapons enjoyed by gun enthusiasts, the more heat all the folks in this hobby will have to take. Quite simply, it could just as easily be machettes, kitchen knives, hammers, or nail guns used by the same idiots to acheive their goal. Bad/no parental upbringing, abuse, mental disorders, lack of education/discipline, unemployment, and environment are the real causes - not guns. Maybe that police commissioner should spend less time on the golf course and more time on his streets to understand what the problems in order to find real solutions. |

Rayman1, That can seem confusing, but understand that most LEOs never reach the position of Chief, or even upper level management. Those that do are more political entities rather than LEOs anymore, and they live in a world of budgets, committees, and elected officials. They may still hold a peace officer license, but they stopped being LEOs years ago for the most part, and started being politicians. In my nearly 14 years as an LEO, I've worked for a total of 6 chiefs in 2 departments. Only one of them still got out and did the job with the troops, and he did it every few weeks, not once a year. He stayed connected and did the WHOLE JOB to include the dirty work. You just don't see that much anymore. Saleen |

RWB64 I'm not in Miami I live just south of Tampa in Lakewood Ranch. I emailed in via a link on the Miami Police website. I'm in the application process to join my local PD. I simply stated the fact that if laws against durgs don't stop the criminals for selling them how could he make the assumption that a law aginst ANY kind of weapon would do anything but disarm the law abiding citizens? I feel very strongly about our consitutional rights and someone disreguarding them for what in nothing more than political gain simply sickens me. |
