| Does anyone know the correct procedure for checking and adjusting for proper headspace on an AK? Thanks in advance for any info. |
You can check it with just a regular NoGo Gauge...some of the Go gauges may or may not be accurate so most people just see if a live round will seat...if your ammo seats and a nogo doesn't then you are good. The bolt should be stripped prior to testing...if you have excessive head space then the barrel pin will have to be removed, the barrel will have to be adjusted, and a new (oversized) barrel pin hole and new barrel pin will have to be installed. |

I use both a GO and a NO GO. While its true that I generally cant get the bolt to fully close on the GO gauge, I can see how close it is to closing, which gives me an idea where the headspace is at. It can also be used to check for wear, since I know its a bit 'tighter' than a live round. I also found that cleanliness is very important. The bolt, trunnion, chamber, and gauge need to be very clean to get accurate readings. To me, its kind of like using a tire pressure gauge to see how low the tire is, insted of just kicking the sidewall. |
