I have seen it described boths ways and wanted to know the correct way to do it...

When field stripping the AK do you need to pull the trigger before dissasembly.  Or can you leave the rifle's hammer in the cocked position when removing the recoil spring and bolt/charging handle.

Also where are the lube points on an AK?

thanks

When you disassemble it does not matter.  When you pull the bolt carrier and bolt back to take them out, it will set (cock) the hammer.  (you can leave it cocked)

To put it back together, you have to set the hammer.

Try not to pull the trigger with the bolt carrier out, smacks the center support and can do a number on your finger if it's in there.  You usually need to push down a bit on the carrier as you slide it into the rails on reassembly (always with hammer cocked).

Oil trigger and hammer pivots and a drop or two on the rails.  Some say not to oil your AK but since I doubt anyone is using theirs in combat (here in USA anyway) I recommend oil.  Yes, it will attract dirt but your going to clean it once and a while right?  If your going to throw it in the dirt/sand to demonstrate how tough it is then don't oil it.

As has been said setting the hammer is optional before dissasembly; just depends on how hard you want to work at getting the bolt carrier out.
