| I'm about to purchase a used MAK 90. I have conducted my own research (alot of it on this site) and for the money i have to spend it seems this is my best bet. I have it on lay away and i'm about to go pick it up. Some of what i have read recently is kind of making me rethink my purchase. The reciever, barrel etc. seems to be in excellent shape. It has a thumb hole stock on it that i plan to change into a pistol grip and a black synthetic stock. My question is are there any other modifications that i need to make other than ordering the screw and bolt assembly to attach the pistol grip? |

MAK90's are great rifles. If you change out the thumbhole stock, you will then have to make it 922r compliant. That means you have to put a number of US made parts onto the rifle. I think (not positive) that it's like 9 US parts. example, a new stock, pistol grip, fore grip, trigger group, etc... I would just leave it the way it is and enjoy it. |
| please excuse my ignorance, i am new to ak's. By 922r compliant are you refering to a law? What i was planning on changing was the stock to a pistol grip and either a black synthetic stock or an adjustable AR type. A picatinny type hand guard and down the road perhaps a muzzle break or some other type of flash suppresor. Now when you speak about the trigger group and 922r compliance Does that mean with the changes i'm planning on making the weapon will function normally but i have broken some law? |

If you are changing out the stock to a regular stock and pistol grip you will need to put in 5 US parts from the compliance list that is posted here in many threads. If you use a US buttstock and pistol grip you will need 3 more parts and the easiet will be to replace the fire control group with a double hook Tapco G2 set which is available on the equipment exchange currently from several sources for about $28.00. Don't buy it from Tapco as it will most likely be more expensive. You will also need a longer pistol grip screw so don't forget to order on of those. When you decide to thread the muzzle (if it isn't already threaded) us a US muzzle device for that 6th part that will be needed.

Simply put, your MAK90 had to be imported with that thumbhole stock because it had no US made parts. (you can't import or manufacture any AK's unless they have X number of US parts) It's the gov't's attempt to get rid of the "evil" features. Most all the AK's you see now are imported as demilled kits, and reassembled here with X number of US parts...that makes them legal Now since the MAK90 was imported with the thumbhole stock, it was exempt from 922r....if you change the stock, you must then replace X number of Chineese parts with US parts for the gun to be legal. I know it's but it's the rule.Don't panic...it's not that hard..your new US made stock counts, add a US picatinny rail, US trigger group, a US muzzle brake etc...it's not that expensive and you can do it yourself with help from the guys here....you'll be fine |
