I previously owned 2 Bulgarian SA 93’s.  I only bought them to tick off Clinton at the time because he did not want us to own them.  However, they were so accurate that they cut a 3 shot cloverleaf group at 100 yards, and that got me back into rifle shooting because I forgot how much fun rifle shooting was.  Unfortunately, since I only bought them as a Bill of Rights protest, I did not value the guns and I foolishly sold them.

My financial situation permits me to get a couple of AK’s and I am quite surprised to find out that my previously owned guns were exceptional.  What is my best hope to acquire AK’s with that kind of accuracy in a 7.62X39?

Thanks for your help!

Buy the same kind again and cross your fingers.

Great advice of course, but I was mostly interested in information on which brand is noted for being the most accurate.

My SA 93's were a sporterized version, and I don't think anyone makes it any more.  Can the American made Arsenal brand be counted on to deliver accuracy?  Did we lose anything because they are made in the U.S.?

Thanks.

No, the sporterized butthole stock models like that and the SLR-95 are not imported any more. But, any of the current milled Arsenal Inc (Las Vegas) AK's will give you good accuracy. Most regard them as the best production AK's available.

The Vector Arms AK's are also very high on the AK food chain for accuracy, fit, finish, and overall quality.

I have only shot cheap Wolf and Brown Bear through my AK's, but my stamped Lancaster is quite a bit more accurate than my SA93.

What ammo were you using to get clover leafs at 100yds? On a good day I can manage 2".

I am not sure of the name.  The gun store I frequent said it was the best AK ammo that he could get at that time.  It was Russian hollow points and labeled hunting ammunition, if that is of any help in identifying it.

While talking to them about the AK's that are available, he said that the ammo I shot those groups with is not available any more, and wanted to sell me a brand called TWC.  He said it is not the same quality but was a good brand and it was available now.

What is good ammo now?  Or should I just be more concerned about getting any ammo right now?

I use S&b and really like it. The best I have ever tried is Lapua. You can get it at Graf & sons. It is expensive but it will measure how good your AK is as far as accuracy,
To get the cloverleaf groups you are talking about Lapua is your best bet.
I personally have never done quite that well at 100 yds using any ammo from my Arsenal Classic.

Thanks texasyid.  I'll check it out.

I was primarily a skeet shooter when Clinton and his like minded congress critters started all of this gun control nonsense.  I had not shot rifles or owned rifles in about 20 years.  I just bought the the 2 rifles to tick off Clinton, and had an extremely good time shooting them.  I thought Since I did not really want an AK, but they were so much fun to shoot, I will get a rifle or two that I really want, and that will be it for rifles.  So I ended up trading them in.  I now consider that decision my sadist day. But I have a lot of rifles now The funny thing is that I have Clinton and the gun controllers to thank for reintroducing me to a hobby that I enjoy very much now.  Isn't life strange?

Thanks everyone for bringing me up to speed.  You have given me the ability to make an informed choice.

Much appreciated.

Can anyone tell me why the AK has to be inaccurate?  I mean I get the loose tolerances for reliability in battlefield conditions, but I have several semi autos that are quite accurate off the bench. The AR's are quite accurate and so was the Garand and M 14, so I am surprised that the AK has trouble in the accuracy department.

There's a lot of misinformation about AK verses AR accuracy.  O_P did some tests with common military ammunition out of his AR.  His results, depending on who produced the ammuntion, ranged from 1&1/4 to 3&3/8 MOA.  Then he demonstrated how with handloads he could shoot about 1/4 MOA out of the same rifle.

Now if you compare that with somebody averaging 2 to 4 MOA out of an AK using cheap Wolf or inexpensive military 7.62x39 ammunition, and the AK isn't all that less accurate than the AR.

Now having said that I must admit that the irons on the AK aren't designed for match-level shooting like the AR sights.  Throw in the fact that most ammunition used in AKM rifles is cheap stuff and of course you aren't going to see stellar accuracy.

Hungarian rifles have exceptional accuracy in my experience, same with chicoms from what I hear.  Bulgarian milled ones will have a bit more weight to stabilize the whole setup, and are pretty accurate from what I hear.  And yes, of course VEPR's are accurate, the cream of the crop will be the very pricey Valmets, and of course Galils.
