| Have you guys noticed a huge difference in "shootability" when using an ultimak an a red dot type optic on your rifles? I understand that an ak will never be a target rifle, I just need to prove a co- worker wrong about aks being junk guns not capable of any real accuracy. All I need to shut him up is a <6" group off of a bench at 100 yds. I love my aks, but I have to admit the sights suck something terrible. |

And 47s can get from 2.5-4" depending on the gun/ammo combo. The rest is up to your hold, trigger pull and vision. Red dots help by allowing 2 eyes to be used very easily, esp when there are only 2 things to line up (dot and target) instead of 2 sights plus target. Now if you have issues framing the irons, consider mojosights.com |
Put a red dot optic on any rifle and you get significant improvements in speed of target acquisition and accuracy. Stock AK47's group 3-5 inches while stock AR15's group 2-4 inches at 100 yards. Not much of a difference. The difference is more noticeable at extended ranges >200 yds. The visual sense is interesting in that we are all different. I actually shoot the AK much better than the AR. That's just me, I'm probably the only one that has that preference. Don't get me wrong, I like my AR15. I just can't shoot it as well as my AK. Weird. I did a couple of things to improve the sight picture of the AK. I put an XS tritium front sight on it and used a metal file to open up the rear sight a little. http://www.xssights.com/store/specialty.html Anyone that calls the AK a junk gun does not understand the facts: (1) It was designed to be durable and reliable above all else. (2) The accuracy at ranges where combat takes place, less than 100 yards, is close to the AR. (3) The AK family of weapons have been, unquestionably, the most widely produced assault rifles for decades. For sure the AR has a bunch of advantages over the AK, ie ergonomics, huge number of accessories, etc, but the AK is not a junk gun. |
Well said. |

I've shot 3" 5 shot groups from the bench with my home build, Mojo peep and Barnaul ammo. Sometimes it's 6"+ with the same combo. I'm in the pocess of getting an Ultimak and red dot for 3 gun use. I'd go with a cobra, but the red dot could see dual use on the AR and it gives a much lower mount. I cant shoot well when my cheek doesn't touch the stock. I'll report on it later. |
If you need a lower tube optic over the shaped reticle of the Kobra/EOTech, fine. But it is good to note that the Kobra with coin battery is the same for weaver base and side rail. Just get the weaver model and spend another $20 on the side bracket from Tantal, and swap mounts with 4 screws. A local friend does this between side mount and the thumb screw weaver. |

| I have the short Ultimak for the AMD 65 on an AMD 65 SBR. I have a Leupold-Gilmore 35 with a 4 MOA dot on the Ultimak. I recently installed it (using the L-G supplied mounts) and have been to the range twice and I am very happy with the setup. Ultimak responded very quickly with answers to my installation questions relating to my slightly crooked gas block. I have fired about 250 rounds since the installation and have had no change in zero. I can see the iron sights at the very bottom of the L-G 35. No complaints at all. |
Well |
| I got out and only got to put about 30 rounds through the gun after I got it zeroed due to weather. The rifle became way more "shootable". I was able to hold about a 2" group off hand at 35 yards rapid fire, which is much better than I could do with this rifle before the optic. I also noticed that I could transition from target to targed much more quickly and accurately. |
