So I bought a surplus GP-25 pad for my Khyber rifle, mostly because the triangle folder is crazy narrow, and after having fired 390 or so rounds the other day, my shoulder looked, and felt, like hammered dog crap. It's not so much the backwards recoil, as the triangle folder is way, way narrow; it's like 2/3 or less of the width of a regular AKM stock, and easily like half as wide as my CAR stock on my AR-15.
Anyway, so the pad itself cleaned up okay, and the leather on the strap is good, no cracks and after I cleaned the dirt off it looks decent, but the metal is all rusty. And I'm left with 2 questions: What is the correct way to attach the pad to the triangle stock? I assumed it was to insert the strap through the pad, press the stock into the pocket, and then strap around the shoulder bar. It's still in the last hole, though. I'm sure the strap is oversized to sling under the AKM/AK-74 wood stock, so that doesn't bother me so much. And, what's the best way to get the rust/corrosion off the metal bits, seeing as how I can't remove them from the leather? I looked around for an hour for my bottle of metal polish, but I couldn't find it. It seems like there might be black paint(?) on some parts, but I'm not for sure, the metal is pretty crusty. Either way, I do like having it on there. It easily doubles the width of the shoulder section of the stock, so maybe it won't hammer my shoulder to death so much with those high round counts. |
