Hello All,
Well I suppose you can guess what I got in the mail today for my AKS-74. A NIB Kobra collimating scope. Unfortunately, I'm having some difficulty understanding the directions when it comes to adjustments. But let's not get ahead of things. I still haven't figured out if I can use AA batteries in this thing or not. I've heard that these scopes can indeed use them, but I don't want to take a chance until I hear from some of you guys out there that have one of these babies. The directions say it takes lithium CR 2325 batteries. The ones that came with it in their original packaging are toast. (3 years old.) So do I have to run to the store and find these lithiums, or will AAs work? Next question will be how to adjust the windage and elevation. They've included a nifty little wrench that is made specifically for adjusting what looks like two different nuts, but to be honest, I don't know what knobs to turn that will actually move the dot!
Sorry to burden you with what may seem are silly questions, but I'm in the dark on this toy. Thank you for your help. Roy |

If yours has the coin type batterys that's what you need. Some models use 2 AA's and others use 2 AA size 3.7v batteries. You have to use what yours was made for. Be thankfull you don't have the last type , best price I've found is almost $7 each.
The tool you mention is used to move the adjustment wheels past the stops. Good directions : http://tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/kobrazer.html |
| Mine is a 1st generation Kobra. The Tantal webstie says that it takes 2 AA size 3v batteries or AAs. So I took a chance and loaded it with a couple of AA alkalines and it worked. Of course, now you have me worried over voltages! Where do you find those batteries? |

Hmmmmm! Never thought to try regular AA in my gen1 Kobra. If they work and you can see the reticule in bright daylight I wouldn't worry about it ; you won't hurt it by suppling it with half the voltage, not sure about battery life, but AA are cheap. My AA version gets over 1100 hours with energizer lithiums and I think I was getting about the same in the gen 1 with the (2) 3v batteries.
The 3v can be had locally at Battiries Plus but they want $9 each for them. Best price I found was on ebay from a store in Utah , think I paid $24 for four , delivered. A search will turn up several sources but the one I used was R_L sales , I think. Neat sights on an AK , enjoy! |
| Yeah, I dropped some plain old energizer AAs into it and it's bright as the sun. As long as this doesn't hurt the scope I guess I won't worry. My scope is a bit strange due to the reticles. It only gives me two choices: The German "T" and the German "T" with a dot in the middle. No chevrons or plain dots. At least that's the reticle I wanted! |
| Do not lose the wrench that came with the unit. The labelled adjustment range on the dials are very limited. More than likely you will find turning them to the maximum amount will not be enough. You will need the wrench to loosen the center nuts that secure the dials. Once you loosen the nuts you lift up on the dials to reset the adjustment needed. You do not need to remove the nuts to do this. You just loosen them a little. You may need to unscrew the dial a few times to get the range of adjustment needed. Using a laser bore sighting tool if you have one can be very helpful to at least get your initial groups on paper at 25 yds. |
