OK.  I am sure that this has been asked before but......

My Romanian AK has a canted front sight and the more that I look at it, the more it seems the rear isn't right either.  So I was thinking about using the side mount for some type of red dot/reflex sight.  Keep in mind that this stays leaning in a corner and will not be used for any type of distance.  Just for "quick grab and engage" if you know what I mean.  I have $394 invested and can't see spending more on an optic than the weapon.  (Don't want to sound cheep.  Just real.)  Now I know that a lot of you have much information so....  any suggestions?  Thanks.

The only type of optic I'd want on a grab and go rifle is one that stays on 24/7. The thought of trying to turn on a sight while I really, really ned to be shooting gives me the willies...

The only one that does that is the Aimpoint. You might find a used older Aimpoint under your budget. I'd probably stick it on a side rail adaptor or get an Ultimak for what you're trying to do. BSW

A used sandbox bringback Aimpoint is fine for both eyes open. Good value and you won't note the scratches. Tube optic wins here since the lower mounting is better for 'no dot' aiming up close/fast with the open tube view when you do not even have time to turn it on. And they have f-o-r-e-v-e-r battery life.

1.5-4x variables are not bad either, no need for battery, but lack the forgiveness of a moving dot relative to the head/eye position

Thanks all.

I use a Trijicon Reflex on my m4 and have for the last 7 years or so and really like it.  But that set up will cost more than the AK.

I will consider the use market.  Thanks again!

the scope on my precision ar15 cost more than the gun - so what?

worry about value, not cost to acquire.

I agree.  I put a Trijicon reflex on my Romanian G build using an Ultimak rail.  It didnt bother me much considering my rifle was professionaly assembled and gun coated for me.  Shoots great with irons.  But the point is a good quality optic can push a not so well built rifle up into the category of performance that you desire.  And a reputable product will give you the peace of mind knowing you can ruff and tumble, no buttons to break or batteries to die and it will keep ticking in any scenario you are likely to be in.

1. Set the $395 blaster aside and buy a much more expensive AK.
2. Install the UltiMAK/Aimpoint Micro optic combo.
