I know a dude who mounted an EOTech on an Ultimak and said the heat kept making the EOTech shut off.  I'm skeptical of EOTechs due to my own shitty experiences with them, so I'm wondering what other types of electronic optics people are using on Ultimaks?  I have an Elbit Falcon that I was thinking of mounting on an Ultimak for one of my AKs.  Anyone try this?

I use a SPOT with an Aimpoint mount.  No heat issues.

The Eotech had the issues not the ultimak.  I have vector w/ ultimak/trijicon reflex and a tantal w/ ultimak/aimpoint.  Never had an issue

Favorite is ultimak/aimpoint

Yeah I realize it was the EOTech.  I'm trying to figure out of my Falcon would have similar issues since the battery/electronics will be close to the gas tube similar to the EOTech.

Was the EOTech fried/dead after this or did the heat just make it crap out temporarily?
Considering how often you find Falcon's for sale, much less NIB ones like I snagged, I don't exactly want to kill it.

One of the colors burned out. The daylight red dot stopped working. The night time green dot continued to work but was difficult to see in the sun.

To be honest I never even heard of a Falcon till you mentioned it. After a few minutes of surfing it became very obvious that it was made by Israel and discontinued 30 years ago. It appears to have been designed for the AR type weapon although it can be mounted on anything with the correct rail. That being said, one site seemed to have some not-so-friendly disagreement on the viability of the Falcon being 30 years old. Some seemed to think the age of a 30 year old unit would be a problem, others seem to think the age of the technology was obsolete and some thought the technology was good enough for war 30 years ago so there should be no issues for civilian use now. There are still plenty of IDF troops that use the M16/Falcon set up today. Based on what I read I would probably stick with the Falcon on an AR.

Of course this doesn't really answer your question if the Falcon will burn up on an Ultimak rail. I just felt there were enough opinions on the 30 year old unit that I would probably not take the chance on a weapon it was not originally intended.

Since you mentioned a green dot, is it safe to assume this was an EOTech clone?

I really want to try it, but maybe I'll just get another Aimpoint for an AK.  I know I'm not the only one with a Falcon though, so I was hoping someone else had tried.  It'd be an expensive experiment though, if it went badly.  [Ron Burgundy]Ahhhh, this is hard![Ron Burgundy]

I'm glad I found this topic...today I shot my AK with ultimak and a Tasco "Red Dot" and it took two strings of about 20 shots to fog up the unit when it heated up.  It took over two hours to clear up after I removed it from the rifle.  BTW, I shot lousy too, and the only thing that went well was the AK ran like a top...but you know what they say, a bad day at the range beats a good day at work!

so Aimpoint seems the way to go.   What about the mini Aimpoint ?

I have a Trijicon I like, but I don't think the mount would cowitness, any lower mounts available?

The UltiMAK AK gas tube rail and Aimpoint Micro optic combo is the best thing going.

I ended up using the low mount manufactured by aimpoint for my aimpoint on an ultimak and it works great.  I love sight picture too.

Paying $600 for the red dot set up on my $550 AK seems outrageous, but I like it.  Besides having an optic that costs about the same as the gun is about right.

Any heat related problems with using the Ultimak / Aimpoint setup?
