I posted this idea in another thread, and now I have a prototype ready. A Gunsmith friend of mine had some steel rail laying around, and MIG welded the rail to the RH side of this Bulgarian gastube. My intentions was to have an unobtrusive way of mounting a light. I have on order a VLTOR Scout Mount for a Surefire G2 light, and a Surefire G2 LED model light on the way. The only thing that way be an issue is the sling. I personally use the BlueForceGear Slings with the MASH hook, and it may/may not clear. I won't know until a week or so when the items arrive. I shall post PICS when the setup is complete upon an ARSENAL 107FR. As far as the weld job, the rail was welded at both ends, and atop as well as the bottom within the grooves of the gastube.

PICS of the VLTOR Scout Mount:

Great idea.  Just mount it on the other side of the tube and you wont have any sling issues...

I'm right handed, thus I don't think that would work out too well. I considered it, but decided to try the LH side first. Will know for sure next week however.

There aren't a lot of sources for steel rail, but SAMSON MFG has some starting at about $70.00 or so in 9" lengths. That should make about five of them. Though the rails are flat on the bottom, and should be contoured to match the tube like the one my Gunsmith did up for me. Actually I had gotten lucky, and he had a piece of steel rail that was already contoured that was meant to be welded onto a 1911 dust cover. He doesn't recall where he had gotten it though, but could conture the flat one's as well if need be.

Received my SureFire G2 LED and VLTOR mount today. It mounted fine, except as I predicted, the sling does get in the way. The BEST alertative in my mind would be a clamp on barrel mount under the gas tube, that positions the rail on the LH side, but would also accept the cleaning rod. This would be flawless. There is nothing currently available like this, other than the MFI mount that puts the light under the barrel, which is less than ideal IMHO, but does what it's suppose to do at least.

I know that the AK is a sturdy design...

But for some reason, should you be using your AK in a fight, and that sling gets snagged on something, you might bend that tube, jaming up your piston assembly, and rendering your rifle "ka-put."

Just a thought...

There's no way a sling will damage/bend the tube... There a lot stronger than what some may think.

Mountsplus.com sells blank(no mounting holes) rails. I think both AL and steel. It's been a while since I spoke to them.

Call and talk to Ned. I bet he can hook you up with all the rail you need.
