Which are better, the Soviet or the Bulgarian?  I don't even own an AK, but maybe someday I will.  I need mags, I think

I'm not a Mag expert, but I belive the "Soviet Bloc" mags your referring to are actually E. German. Mags. Which are great mags.Sorry I dont have a Bulgarian mag to compare it too.

I just picked up 9 of the new Bulgarians.  Prettiest darn mags I have seen.  But then, it is the first time I have ever even seen a new AK mag.  My only regret is not picking up more, and perhaps some of the others they have for comparison.

EDITED:  Fast service as well.  I am in Alaska and had the mags in hand within the week.  A rarity.

I got 10 of the new Bulgarian mags just a couple of weeks ago.  Excellent quality, and CDNN was top notch, from the guy taking my order, to shipping time, to they way they were packed.

I gotta say CDNN is great too!
I orders a bunch of AR items and one of those items was a telescoping stock. Well, I wasn't really happy with how loose and jiggly the stock was on the buffer tube(not the fault of CDNN) and they excepted it back and gave me a full refund and didn't charge a re-stocking fee.

Great guy and gals down there!

So far then it seems CDNN is the way to go right now.  I got a couple of Saiga .308 mags from them a while ago at a good price.

The major difference is:
1. The Bulgarian mags are finished in a rough sort of textured finish, kind like(but not as thick) as a truck bedliner. Very durable finish, some sort of moly teflon rough finish.
2. The Soviet Bloc (E German) are blued steel, very simular to the Chinese of a bygone era, with the exception of the reinforcement rib down the back. The blue can/does wear, but these mags have a more traditional look to them.

My only issue is buying used. In my experiences, this is a crap shoot. Sometimes you get excellent/new mags sometimes you get some that have small dents/dings in them that can cause FTF issues. If I can hand pick them I buy used, if blind, I buy new. Its only a couple bucks difference, and AK mags are designed to live as long as the weapon so I give them the chance.

YMMV

Good advice on buying used.  These things are built to last, may as well start with brand new.

I prefer the E. German mags myself. I still wish I had bought more back when I was getting them packed in two mag packs for $16 a pack. Interordinance had the Bulgarian ones for $5.95 each about a year ago, I wish I had bought more then 20 then. Of course I still wish I had bought more Chinese mags when they were going for $2 each

Both Clearview Investments and Centerfire Systems had 4 packs for 24.99 last month. They both are now up to 29.99. I ordered from Centerfire the other day and asked for the 24.99 price I saw in Shotgun news. After shipping and credit card fee my 16 mags cost me about $7.12 each shipped.

I personally recommend CDNN investments, there mags are top quality, I bought a sh*t load of Walther factory 32 mags w/ finger extensions for $19

As for Ak mags refer to the comparision article on euro mags above, like many I prefer east german mags first I am bias I am east german collector and second they are rugged and were cheap in the original pouches, I have plenty some new in the wrap both ak-47 and ak-74, both mags are still available check shotgun news. I bought when they were cheap, last year tapco ran a special AK-74 pouch complete 4 mags cleaning kit, stripper $19

Wow my mags came in from Centerfire already. I ordered on Monday and they are here on Thursday. Bravo!

I have not gone over each one real close but all 16 seem to look in excellent shape. About 3 or 4 of them have shinny metal showing at the bottom plates and at the lips, but that is about it. Several look almost brand new. I see several Hungarian, a few Bulgarian with the texture to it, and I see at least one E. German. When I have more time I will sit down and look each one over to see if I can tell of their origin.

But I am very pleased with my 16 mags for $113.79

This could get addicting. Also 2 waffles arrived today from K-var, and I really like these.

Now, regarding Clearview and Centerfire. Both have very similar ads in the Shotgun news. Both have similar prices. Now get this. They both have the same address, one being suite 200 and the other 300. One had their mag combo $.03 cheaper.

CDNN is IMO one of the best out there... I've ordered tons of AK mags from them and even the used would pass for new (in gun shows) LOL.  And since i live about 2 hours away, my order comes in the next day.  If you haven't tried them... do so - I think you'll be impressed.

Yestarday at noon I ordered 5 of the new Soviet Mags. The UPS guy just kicked them off at my door at 2:20 today. These guys are fast!!!!!!

Upon inspection of the package, They sent me 3 Soviet mags and 2 of the more expensive  Bulgarian mags.  I guess they must be short on the Soviet mags.

The Finish on the Bulgarian mags is the prettiest I have seen. Would like to have my gun finished this way.
