Just picked up a "36" 75 rd drum and have a question...

Does the wind function only work when loaded? (something to hold and lock the mechanism while it winds)

I had one of these before and can't remember (der, I sold it)

Its not recommended to wind one up without ammo in it.If you want to test put a few rounds in it and wind it up.
