| Years ago, when East German bakelite mags were dirt cheap, I sprayed a few with gunkote in an effort to make them match the polymer Kvar furniture on my SAR-2. Anyone have an idea on removing the gunkote without damaging the bakelite magazine itself? |

As stated, blasting and or sanding is the ONLY way to remove that sort of finish. As an example I rubbed fully cured Brownell's AH II paint with Acetone rubbing hard. Nothing on the rag at all, it didn't even phase it. GunKote and AH2 are different. AH2 is resistant to acetone (as you have discovered). If you want to remove AH2, try epoxy remover. Both are excellent firearm finishes and resist common solvents like mineral spirits, rubbing alcohol, acetone, brake cleaner, kerosene, and Hoppes #9. Three big differences are: 1) AH2 can be removed chemically while GK cannot. GK can only be removed mechanically (i.e., w/ an abrasive). 2) AH2 is thicker than GK. I used AH2 on my AK with no problems. My 870 is built a bit tighter, so I used GK. GK would also be good for a tight 1911. 3) AH2 is air-cured. GK is oven-cured. Both are available in rattle cans from Brownells. |
